Basaltgooroo
Had a good time at franconia this weekend. Met some new people and talked with Robert Verish.... I was talking to him about how i find almost half of my franconia chondrites by eye. Funny thing is, the next day i found a 1 gram chondrite then a 4 gram chondrite then a 51.5 gram chondrite... The 51.5 gram chondrite had eroded out of the side wall of a small gully. I didn't have my GMT since it is in the shop and I was retarded with Del's GP3500 so i decided to go by eye. Payed off. I ended up with 57.1 grams total with 3 stones and 2 irons. My dad is getting good with that Joey coil on the SD2100. He found 23.3 grams of stones the largest being 9.85 grams. He also found a 1.25 gram iron that looks like the letter Y. He also found 4.2 grams of irons.... Here are the pics of my finds I will post pics of my dad's finds tomorrow after school. The one thing that ticked me off was that i couldn't fit the big stone in the container... Oh well.... [Erik]

Guest meteorite-hunter
Hi Eric, yes, Bob Verish is a great guy. He taught me how to find meteorites and I have been a bit successful doing it. I just need to be out more often to find them. I am surprised you wrote you were talking to him. Usually one listens to him because of his enthusiasm and opinions about meteorites, he thinks he should do the talking. Just teasing! ;-) But its great that you can add more meteorites to your collection! Wonderful! I went out hunting Saturday too with Greg Stanley, who should say hi to this forum, he just joined and we didn't make any finds that we know off. Some may be - could be ones. We have to check them. Happy hunting, Moni
Basaltgooroo
Varish had brought a bunch of people out to give them tips on how to hunt meteorites... My dad counted a caravan of 17 cars.... WOW. Most of the people didn't even stop to listen to his advise, they just started walking around with excitement. Most people didn't have detectors. Most had magnets and magnet canes. One guy said he was going "fishing" for meteorites. He had a stick 2 foot long string with a magnet on the end tied to a 2 foot long wooden dowel. The magnet wasn't strong enough to pick my "L" of the ground so i don't think it could yank any meteorite out of the desert pavement. Verish was talking about what the franconias look like but he had 2 large buck mountain wash meteorites lol. They seem to have a more "cottage cheese" look. Almost like celulite for meteorites lol. I gave my opinion on how to hunt by eye since i have found almost half of my stones by eye [hope my eye sight last for a long time] Then i went on hunting. We didn't stay for long because we where in an area that had alot of material found and had been cleaned out....

azdigger
Wow, nice ones Erik, I tried to work things out so I could make it but it did not happen. If I had been there you could have used my MXT, I gotthe 6X10 and 4X6 DD coils for it. It seems you did real well for just eyeballing them. I hope to make it back out there soon. SoCalNovice
Hey all, I spent Saturday with the group of rock hounds. I broke off from them after about 1-1/2 hours and went on a long hike to where I know meteorites had been found in the past. I came back with pockets and pockets of rocks that really sounded off my detector and were highly attracted to a magnet. They all turned out to be meteorwrongs. I also came across this in the field I could definitely be wrong, but this decaying rock looked like a huge (as big as my head) meteorite that was severely weathered with all the iron rusted out of it. It was on the far side of the field, found about 4-5 inches below the surface. It also could have been that reddish basalt with the metal looking flecks in it. :confused0013: ??? I left it in-situ, it was too heavy to carry back :tisc-tisc: . I have coordinates if need be. When I got back to camp I cooked up some food and waited for Del, Erik & Ben to get back from their hunt. When they got back we ate a little and the B.S.ing began. I learned a lot from Saturday night's talks and it was nice to get to know a few more fellow hunters. Erik may only be 16 but he is already a meteorite wiz, I can tell it is because his Dad has schooled him well. What a great hunting team those two make :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: . I hate to say it, but it was only one iron I found Sunday. I found it within the first five minutes of detecting. I chose to go hunting by sight in the afternoon since Erik spotted a few. I get kinda discouraged with the detector sounding off over everything since there is so much basalt in the area, it gets confusing for me :grrr01: . I have never found a chondrite at Franconia yet so I don't know what sound I am looking for. I had a great time anyway! Scott
Basaltgooroo
I can't believe that that stone had eroded out of the bank of that hill. Shows hop deep they can sink. That one sank maybe a foot and couldn't be detected. Then with the rain it worked its way back out. Scott, you would think there would be a good chance more had eroded out but i guess not. Still most of the finds over 20 grams are found on the surface.
Paseclipse
Alright guys, here's a post of my Franoconia finds for the weekend. Sorry it took so long, I got sucked into work because I took monday off for personal reasons. I had a total of 30 Irons, (1) 15 gram Chondrite, and (1) 4 gram Chondrite. I'm just happy I finally found something over 1.5 grams! Eric- Dang kid, you always cease to amaze me with your finds. As always you did a great job and thanks for the advice you offered me. I was around him when he found that 51.5 grammer, you guys should have heard how happy he was! Ben- I can't thank you enough for the things you taught me. Next time, I promise I'll start gridding in the same type of pattern you suggest. Rick- Keep it up, you have that small Iron I gave you to practice on now, you'll find one eventually. Scott- Hey we have to go hunting sometime, shoot me a PM when you've got the time. Overall I had another great weekend guys, thanks for everything! We'll have to do this again soon. I wanna find a big one too.. it seems like my dad always finds the biggest ones and I end up finding the strangest or rarest ones... Oh well....i never imagined i would have this many meteorites when i started. [Erik]
