Goldfinger
Don: If you scratch a piece of white porcelain with an unknown rock- sometimes it will leave a colored streak on it. This is a test they use to narrow down indentification of certain minerals. For instance hematite will streak reddish brown- pyrite will streak black- galena will streak grey.etc. Steve

garimpo
Question for today: is it good or bad to "tumble" Irons to clean them up? Looking for ways that will work.
Goldfinger
Hi Guys: Here's a procedure that is supposed to clean rust off iron meteorites. I've seen this procedure many times before but never would I ever have thought it would work on iron meteorites. http://www.alaska.net/~meteor/Galvanic.pdf The sodium carbonate used in this process sometimes goes by the name of "soda ash" and can be found at pool supply stores and well stocked hardware stores. It can also go by the name of "washing soda" and might be found in grocery stores. I don't know where you can get distilled water but I would think any water that's been processed through an RO (reverse osmosis) machine would suffice.
