The forum is fine, like many of the ole timers on the forum said, sometimes its slow, sometimes it picks up. It is what it is. Thankfully Bill still keeps it up and I am thankful for that. With  winter and lots of chores to do like cutting and clearing trees, burn piles, plus making a living and paying bills many of us haven't had the time with all the excitement going around these days.

As others have said, this forum has seen more activity in the past than currently, at least it looks like that to me.

Hjjowever.....

There has always been and there still is a vast amount of very valuable information to be found here, and lots of experienced people with a huge range of education and experience who visit regularly and frequently share their knowledge.  I don't have training on the law, geology or prospecting for that matter, but I have been the grateful recipient of very useful information thanks to those who are more experienced or educated in those matters.

Yes, we have lost several long time members of this community in the past few years, fine people I have had the pleasure of sharing a camp fire with and they were generous with their knowledge and would help out without any hesitation.  I miss them.

Also It is worth mentioning that this forum is free for our use as we may wish, Bill has provided this forum for us at no charge.  Period.  Thank you Bill.

Also, thank you Skip for keeping things on an even keel hereabouts......

I have read end enjoyed the continuing saga of the troubled diggers in the High Sierra.  A good yarn, thank you Ghost Miner.

Jeff

Regarding "This Forum" post....
I just had a look at the Detector Prospector forum where the Ghost Miner story continues. New additions are each getting about 6 likes over there. Ghost Miner was getting about 3 likes per addition that he pasted here. If you do the math based on likes, he lost 33% of his (NINE) regular likers by making a big stink and talking down this forum.
Don't get me wrong. I hope the best for Ghost Miner and all of the Nuggetshooter members. I too, read and enjoyed all the episodes and I'll second what Jeff said. Hats off to Bill and Skip for putting up with us for all these years.

You all act like the slow down is just a recent thing or a seasonal thing but the truth is its been stagnating for a while compared to when it first started-Ive been here since the beginning of the forum and alot of the old members either moved on or just watching like me  or arent with us anymore-This use to be the best gold forum around - IMO Forums are like a ship if the captain isnt around sooner or later the mates a banded ship and then the ship sinks-its what ive  seen happen to a couple and a couple in the works-forums are becoming a thing of the past thanks to social medias which I dont do:idunno: :m2c:

unfortunately .... I agree with you. Bill needs to be more involved to keep this going but that is his choice.  I'm not as active right now at finding gold now but I do post when I do.

I think the overall energy/finding gold with new people is slowing down also. Its hard work and you have to have a dedication to keep going on.

Not talking down any forum. I just said it's not worth posting with less than 30 actual readers per day. Maybe only 20 LOL. I don't know how many members the forum I post on has but in a little over a year the journal has had nearly 256,000 views. About 700 per day. The highest day for views was 2900 and lowest 300. Lately, it has been climbing again with weekends Fridsy, Saturday, Sunday) hitting about 3000 views. I would also like to say that I was contacted recently by one of the producers from a well known cable company. I have turned an offer down to be on a show. Why? I would have to give away control of the journal to someone that could possibly destroy it for TV. It's not all a yarn as the viewers who are reading it understand. There is still a very large gold deposit on the claim where the work is now taking place in 1950 log. Fascinating stuff being told and all for free. By the way, views and posts are dropping on many forums. Youtube may be one reason as well as viewing habits changed quite a bit as people returned to normal life after the pandemic.  Cheers.

I may be missing something here...  I have been working in the gold mining industry as a career for 35 years. In the beginning I was a refiner.. so I have handled and poured thousands of ounces, but I had none of my own.  So, I decided to do more metal detecting.  I needed a jump start in experience because I didn't have 20 yrs of hands-on field trips to gain the knowledge to be successful. Reading others adventure's and experiences and viewing their finds is a pleasure and has kept me believing that I can find gold... and I have.  I truly appreciate the knowledge others have shared to help me be successful.

I do not post that much... But I have, and now that I retired, I hope to share more of my experiences in the field.  I have never nor will I ever be concerned   with how many views or reads I have received on this or any other forum.  With that said!! I mean no disrespect as I appreciate the time and effort members put into writing and sharing experiences and educational research and stories.  I read what interest's me and that is not everything that is posted.

As far as Bill's involvement with the forum. I am thankful that he pays to keep it up and running and if he wants to chime in.... cool. I watch his NuggetShooter Journals and others,  but, don't necessarily post a response every time.  I believe the activity of the forum members are vital and not so much the sole responsibility of its founder.

Respectfully :m2c:

I think forums of all kinds are slowly (or not so slowly) vanishing. I also think that members of the dead forums are going to what's left of the active ones. I do agree that it only takes one knowledgable person to help someone so in that case numbers don't matter. If a member is looking for active conversation and active members then they leave the slow ones like this one. Nothing against any of them but it seems to be what's happening. Nothing lasts forever.

I could also start a thread on gold mining trommels I have used and small scale placer exploration in general. Not sure if anyone would even be interested though. I'm not into metal detecting. I like to dig big holes and trenches LOL.

"If a member is looking for active conversation and active members then they leave the slow ones like this one."

That's quite an assumption!  I have been a member of this forum for 12 yrs.  At times, I have not been active for months.  Life gets busy sometimes. I have not left nor will I.   But, When I have time to catch-up, I come here or I have something to ask or share I always get a response, that's all that matters to me.

I wish you the best of luck on your writing and sharing endeavors and quality or quantity of what you're expecting for in views and responses.

Cheers!!

Interested in what trommels you have built for sure. No dredging in California LOL. I have used the Gold Claimer Brand as well as the Heckler Fabrication trommel/shaker. Also one homemade one that I did not make. All were very good. Excavators - Deere 690, Komatsu, Kabota. Several Kabota skid steers as well as articulated rock trucks.

Heck yeah!! We have always wanted our own operation like that!

Im trying to dig up pictures of the 2 we built. Nothing production size like that though. We built a really bada@@ one that we towed with the 4 wheeler. Had a 4 foot long drum and a 4 foot sluice. Had a gear reduced 5hp Briggs on it and the 3 of us could shovel into it as fast as we could and it would never overload it. Then my dad bought a smaller tractor and we built a classifier screen to dump onto. 1/2" minus went through the screen and we shoveled it from under the screen right into the trommel. Man we would move the dirt! The last one we built is for a mini ex and it has a 7 foot long drum. This one will chew up some material! But we have never had that one in the hills. Only test runs at home is all.

That small towable trommel would be great for testibg gravels or running a small old school operation. One thing I learned about trommels - cut the yardage per hour ratings in half for real life operation. The bigger trommel I posted pics of was homebuilt and could run about 40 yds of gravel an hour. The other two were rated for close to 30 yds of gravel per hour but in reality it was hard to get much more than 15 yds without overloading and jamming them up. We fed with a skid steer which is fast. We needed to build a ramp for the steer to get high enough to dump into the hopper feeder. A big skid steer is capable of keeping a 40 yd an hour trommel running. Combine that with a mid size excavator for digging and you're in business.

I found the pictures!

The little trommel is a picture of a picture so might be blurry.

The other trommel has yet to be used!!

Nice job with both trommels.:thumbsupanim  Do you have someplace where you can use them? Will permits be required for the small one?

Hope you have lots of success this summer. Post some pics for us armchair prospectors.

The bigger one, yes we would definitely need permits. Unless we shovel into it lol.

The little one, we just shoveled into it so basically it was just a rotating highbanker lol!! And we had a BLM guy pull up when we were running it and he thought it was pretty cool!

My son & I are thinking of starting to build small trommels for prospectors. The small one would be something of interest. I also had in mind something like the old California Sluice Box Company motorized trommel they stopped building a few yrs ago. Something to shovel into that could do maybe 1 - 3 yds/hr. I'll let you know when we're heading out to California. I come across ! 80 when I travel to the claims to meet up with the partners. Go right through Reno. Bring it out & put it to work. I've got permits in place where you could use the big one as well. Cheers.
