With the pictures and information you've stated, the only mineral off the top of my head that comes close to your description is hematite but that usually streaks a reddish brown. That's just a guess.

Weather worn basalt, some with cross sections showing the vents hot gasses escaped from as it cooled.  I think this type of basalt is called vesicular basalt.
