Allen
Hello all was out today with my gold monster when it registered this specimen. It was show a strong gold sound and signal. I picked it up and for the size about 3 inches round and only about 1” thick. It weighs 16 oz. I thought that it would have iron with the black and the quartz showing. But my name badge magnet just fell right off of it. It did not stick at all. I have it in salt and viniger right now so we will see what turns out. Of course the top you can see the bottom needs a good cleaning. Here are some pictures of the find before it is cleaned.
Morlock
Can you do a streak test on the black part?

Morlock
https://geology.com/minerals/streak-test.shtml You can use the underside of a toilet tank lid assuming it's white. All a streak test does is tell you the color of the powdered mineral which can aid in the identification.
Allen
I broke it up yesterday. It looks like it may be pyrite in it. It is funny gold monster 1000 registered it as gold. It weighed about one pound and for the size it was small. It does not look like there is any gold in it.
chrisski
Aside from the “gold” indication, is the sound sharp like a metal target, or warbly like a hot rock? The hot rocks I found are on the surface.
Allen
It was in the gold setting and sharp signal.
Relichunter2016
Crush it and pan it, could have a little pocket of gold inside.
chrisski
I’m not sure how big it is, but a couple inches or less I’d crush and pan. It’s good exercise in the times I’ve used the mortar and pestle but only found a couple of specs of gold. A good magnifying glass and light helps. 60 power jewelers loupe: https://www.amazon.com/Magnifying-Loupe-Jewelry-Magnifier-Jeweler/dp/B0137997H2/ Edited February 21 by chrisski

I've found specimens that sound just like gold but contained none. In most cases it was either pyrite or galena that gave off the signal. It's odd some specimens that contain pyrite or galena can set off a detector but others don't. I'm left scratching my head at times.
