Sixrabbit
Hi. New member here. I think this is the third meteorite I have found. Found on a beach in Northern California. I would like an identification or assessment of it. Thanks.
DarkSilicate
Better than good chance that if you found it on the beach, it is not a meteorite. Magnet sticks as it will on a lot of rocks but, have you tried a streak test? Hematite will leave a red streak, magnetite will leave a black. Are you telling me that I have to find some unglazed ceramic after finding a magnet in my car and a meteorite on the beach? You must be joking. Hah jk, thanks for the advice. Would a toilet tank cover work?
Sixrabbit
There’s little shiny black flecks in there with some Little Rock’s embedded. The streak test seemed to show an orange brown mark.
Morlock
The orange brown streak would most likely indicate it's hematite. Note the color of the toilet tank cover...beige. If it were white, it would most likely streak reddish brown which indicates hematite.
Sixrabbit
Ah that’d be a bummer. Should I go to the window test next?
DarkSilicate
Personally, I wouldn't worry about doing more testing. It's hematite. What I thought when I first saw your pictures of it.
Sixrabbit
Cool. What are the shiny specks inside of it? I tried to file it down and it’s really hard.
