North of the railroad, pretty hot on a VLF and dense.  My friend found it and asked for help with id opinions. I think its basalt. Unfortunately, he  cant grind it as it was left behind.

It looks like basalt to me.

I thought so too.  He said it was denser than others but I didnt think a meteorite’s surface would be rough and grainy like that either.

It's going to react differently to a magnet too. Basalt can be magnetic but it won't snap to a magnet like something with free iron in it.

It sounds different on a VLF too. It will have more of a "howl" than a "zip". Sometimes they are pretty convincing. But by the time you get down to them you usually know something is different about the sound.

A quick rub on a sanding block will eliminate any doubt with a rock like that. They streak readily and the inside looks just like the outside. After you have rubbed a few it sinks in and you recognize them right away.

It was leaverite.  Your friend made a good decision.

I've found lots of meteorites up north and none of them looked like that.  If you looked at a meteorite sitting next to this hot rock you would see the difference.
