Basalt can be magnetic but it won't snap to a magnet like something with free iron in it. It sounds different on a VLF too. It will have more of a "howl" than a "zip". Sometimes they are pretty convincing. But by the time you get down to them you usually know something is different about the sound. A quick rub on a sanding block will eliminate any doubt with a rock like that. They streak readily and the inside looks just like the outside. I've found lots of meteorites up north and none of them looked like that.
