Quartz coral? Or geode maybe?

Recommended Posts

I think this is a piece of coral but am in north Louisiana so it seemed to be kinda out of place.  I suppose the ocean use to be up here or maybe a bird carried it.  But I wondered if it was something that may be worth something or if it was just pretty. Maybe it's not even coral, idk. Also I broke the very top off before I realized what it was and it exposed the awesome shinyness. Thanks in advance.

I think it probably is coral. I can’t Norris down the species but someone else here might be able to. As to your comment about Louisiana being under an oven, the entire south was at one point, which is what made the land so fertile.

As said above  Louisiana has lots of marine fossils. I think you may be right about it being a coral fossil. I’m not sure if it’s quartz though, I suspect either calcite or limestone. Put some vinegar on it and see if it bubbles to check it, If it does it is definitely not quartz. Also check these documents to see some good ID references too.

I really need to proof read before I hit submit.

in my above post, “Norris” should be narrow, and “oven” should be ocean. Ack.

I figurEd it was rock slang for ocean and narrow. Life's too short to proof read
