I smashed it up with a hammer. I love collecting rocks bit I'm terrible at identification. I have tried for a couple hours to figure out what this chunk of stone is made of but I have no idea and need help. It is a composite, so I want to know what the amber and dark orange glass like rock is, what is the slightly reddish red or green rock, and what is the slightly crystalline gray stone it is all surrounded by. Thank you in advance, I appreciate it greatly! And I'm sorry I'm such a newb to rock identification. These are pieces of a large rock I found in Utah by a giant copper mine. I got most of them wet so they would be more visible in the photos and not just look dusty. Thank you in advance, I appreciate it greatly! And I'm sorry I'm such a newb to rock identification. Morlock
You have quartz with impurities with the impurities being responsible for the non white colors. You do have a form of quartz called chalcedony. I don't see much else.
John77
Thank you Morlock, I've heard of chalcedony and I looked it up and you are totally right for everything not colored amber, but the amber is in like sheets of glass, is that another form of quartz that's been super heated to form glass sheets. I believe you if you say it is, I had just never seen anything like it, so I thought maybe it was something interesting. Oh well, I guess it wasn't anything cool. Thank you for the information. I appreciate you taking the time to look and answer.
