Hello Doug, didnt you have 5000 before the GPZ? Or a 4500.

Hi Dan, I had a 3500 with a NF Advantage-E 14x9.  Before that it was a Tesoro LoboST  and before that (when I was a kid) I had a Garret TR MoneyHunter  LOL

Oh yeah thats right. I was just going to ask your depth you got with the 5000. I knew you had an EVO coil but couldn't remember your detector.  The depth im getting with the 5000 and the 15 inch EVO is unbelievable. Just was wanting to compare my results with yours is all if we had close to the same setup.

Lol i think my father inlaw has an old Garrett Money Hunter sitting in the corner somewhere. He said he found a lot of stuff with it. He also has one of the old Whites that didn't have a tone, it just has a light on the coil that lit up when you came across something. Wow how technology has changed!!

Hey GotAU,

The signal was just enough of a change in the tone to make me investigate.  It was not good... but was repeatable...  I don't have a link that I go to for settings, but I know if you search around you can find what people use.  I tried some of what others use and they weren't really for me.  Some like to set it so that it is real chatty.... a lot of noise.  I prefer quiet-n-smooth.  I'm no expert and still trying different settings out.   The best thing I could recommend to you is get a little piece of lead (sounds like gold) and practice way away from electric power lines.  See what works best for you.  Re-read the manual ... then read it again..

Best of luck... OH yeah.... and hunt where gold has been found.... for starters.

All good advice, you are right about the lead, I am getting pretty good at finding smaller and smaller pieces of it!  Just counting the days down until one of them is actually the real thing.

My trouble is getting a real weak signal and sometimes it appears repeatable and others it doesn’t, I try different angles and then go back to the direction I was facing at first and it seems like it changes. No hot rocks being moved by accident or anything like that, no EMI sources around, so I’m not sure what’s happening there. It doesn’t happen a lot, so I think it’s not something with the coil or cable.

I don't swing a 7000, so maybe this won't apply....  When you are having the 'ghost signal' problem, try to turn the gain/sensitivity down slightly and see if that quiets it down any.  When I have this problem with the GPX, a tiny gain tweak is often the solution.

As far as hot rocks go....  If it makes a noise, I kick it out of the way.  I don't rely on the machine ground balance to do all the work.  If it's making a noise, the detector is trying to tell you something.  It just takes a few seconds to move the 'noise maker' and see if that's all it was.  Most times it was the 'hot rock', but every now and then, there is another signal underneath the hot rock.  Then things usually get more interesting.  Good Luck.
