billdean
I know this site is more geared toward gold, but I do not know of any place else to get any information. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site so here I am again. In the picture there is some black staining through out the rock. I have tried with a tooth brush and dawn soap to remove it but it still there. Is there a way to remove it with out hurting the stone and or the colors? d_day
Using some iron out might do it, but if it were my stone I wouldn’t even try. in your other thread, several people mentioned you might have some fire agate. this piece looks like it’s got some fire, particularly in the top right corner. some very careful sanding and polish will bring it out if it’s there. billdean
Would lightly tumbling it in finer type media work?
Haderly
I would get it in front of someone that knows fire agates. You can waste a lot of time for no reason or destroy a great stone. Anyone that has carved fire agate will be able to let you know if it has potential. It is very uncommon to know how much potential without starting to grind it with diamond bits. Without being specific can you let us know the general region you found the stones. True fire agate is not very common and I don't know of any of the areas that are associated with gold however there are lots of areas with brown chalcedony.
billdean
It came from west of Phoenix, Az. I am heading down west of Tucson tomorrow. Maybe I can stop at a rock shop after I get unhooked and set back up.
chrisski
Being in the same area, I would not have even recognized it as a potential gem. To me, it looks like the dirty quartz I like to pick up as samples and crush with a mortar and pestle.

The layer of hematite that creates the fire is usually exceedingly thin and can quickly be destroyed.
