Found some awesome ones ( pic heavy )

Recommended Posts

I was out yesterday rock hunting in a new location. I found 4 possible agates, 3 possible petrified wood pieces, and 2 possible rose quartz pieces. What do you all think? Even if they are not what I think they are, they are pretty cool looking in my opinion lol.

I will post the photos not lit and lit with a light.

I think everything above the pet wood looks like quartzite.

So what's the difference between quartzite and an agate? I am confused because everything I find is quartz or quartzite but lots of people seem to find agates and to me they pretty much look the same. How do you tell the difference?

The size of the crystals that make up the piece are the difference.

Agate is cryptocrystalline or microcrystalline like glass. Quartz is crystalline like a sugar cube.

Check out the threads in this forum. I have written a half dozen dissertations on the different forms of silicon dioxide.

Your pieces of petrified wood are agatized and "cryptocrystalline". They are a form of agate and break with glassy surfaces. The rose quartz "quartzite" is not glassy when it breaks. It breaks along the cleavage planes of tiny crystals and is rough like a broken sugar cube. Not slick sided like broken glass surfaces.

Agate is translucent and "clear" where quartzite is translucent and "frosty". That "frosty" look comes from the small but visible crystal structure.
