Hi I was at local beach with dog and heard something land quite close to me just in the water.  The dog ran to investigate and I found this.  I'm not 100% sure if it was this as I just found it in area the dog had run to.. It definitely moves a magnet when I hover it over it but I have no idea what it could be.  Any ideas?? Thanks..

So does slag have metal in it?

Indeed it does. It is the product of smelting metal, welding, etc. It is the waste metal, impurities and flux that foams up when metal is melted into a liquid state. Slag is often very magnetic.

Meteorites are (generally) very dense. The environment they formed in is a vacuum devoid of gases. They will never have gas bubbles. Your specimen is like a sponge where gas bubbles were forming.

The flux in a smelter furnace is designed to keep gasses (oxygen) away from the molten metal to prevent oxidation. As a result it is just full of gas bubbles and is easily recognizable. They use it as erosion control on the seashores, in roads, and as the railroad beds. It is often crushed and spread on roads for traction on ice. So this type of smelting product is very common and gets distributed all over the place.

Wouldn't the Martians smelt and weld as well as us Earthlings? 😉

Indeed they would. But those on undifferentiated planetary bodies and those differentiated bodies that have been smashed to bits don't have to worry about oxidation. They can weld without flux and produce no slag. :)

Looks like slag from a cutting torch to me. I just threw out about 50 pounds of it this weekend from my welding table.

Shoulda sold it on Ebay like the rest of us Dan!

The new gold rush is gullibility and ignorance. It is everywhere! We are RICH with it!

I am smashing up Jaegermeister bottles under the cutting table and selling the results as pallasites. Business is booming. 100% satisfaction rating on Ebay. I have a paper with some technical crap on it that people can use to convince themselves it is real and everything. They come in a little gift box with red velvet that really sets off the "olivine crystals". I'm considering slicing a few big ones and making some huge wristwatches with a half dozen knobs sticking out. That should sell even better!

Real is not a big issue in this brave new world. As long as you can make them BELIEVE they will stick their fingers in their ears, close their eyes and pretend it is real. If you challenge their beliefs they will get hostile. Once you get a few believers the crap sells itself.
