Laural
Hi! I was gifted what I thought was graphite, but now I don’t know if it might be lead. It’s very heavy, and seems to look more like lead than graphite! I have included a picture as well! Thanks for your help!
Morlock
Looks like galena..a lead mineral.
chrisski
Pure graphite is supposed to be less dense, lighter than a white quarts rock of the same size. With Galena, it would be twice as heavy as a quarts rock of the same size. Lead would be almost 4 times as dense as a quarts rock the same size. With that, it points away from being graphite. Since I'm no expert and there's all sorts of metallic looking specimens, especially when smaller and magnified, I can't hazard a guess other than its not graphite based on "it feels very heavy." d_day
I agree with Morlock. Looks like galena.
Knifemaker84
Galena from Missouri? I have several specimens that look identical. Galena is a lead sulfide. That is why it is heavy like lead. The third an forth image is questionable but it tests as galena from an advanced spectrometer.
