Try taking some more photos outside in natural lighting but not direct sunlight.

I got the impression it was metallic, which really limits the things it could be.

Definitely brecciated, but metallic. I'm thinking hematite or magnetite, or some variety of pyrite. One of those things you just can't tell from a picture.

I think it's an impregnated resin of some sort.  Best way to find out is to heat a tiny, steel, needle and see if the point will pierce the material.  Pick a spot that is not visible when the necklace is worn.  If the hot needle pierces the material it is most likely a man-made resin.
