metwerks
Found this rock in Upper Michigan this weekend and see it has what appears to be remnants of fusion crust - dark brown and some black colored crust which is paper thin. The first pic also shows rock fragments (just left of center) that is in the matrix and looks like breccia. I would appreciate any thoughts on this possibly being a meteorite and fusion crust. (very heavy and attracts magnet) Edited August 21, 2017 by metwerks
Mikestang
Does not resemble fusion crust to me, looks like a terrestrial iron rich basalt.
metwerks
Thanks Mike. Any thoughts on the breccia? Is that common to see in basalt?
Mikestang
I don't really know, my geology isn't that great, but a quick google search turns up lots of results, especially for volcanic basalt breccia. Give the glacial activity in north Michigan that rock could have come from almost anywhere... hopefully someone else can chime in.
metwerks
Thank you - I really appreciate this forum and the opinions / time shared here (Yourself included). I sanded down a area and did find some metal looking flakes as well as provide better view of breccia matrix
metwerks
Few more under microscope - I assume this is as Mike indicated as a basalt, but would welcome any additions info - 3rd pic is same as 2nd but after a brief wipe with ferric acid Edited August 22, 2017 by metwerks
Mikestang
Very interesting! It does not resemble any meteorite I have ever seen, but I really have no clue what it is. Edited August 22, 2017 by Mikestang

Uncle Ron
Interesting bit... It would be a good idea to get those chondrules tested for nickle content...Worth checking just for fun! Cheers, Unc
