Au Seeker
Nice point, I'm thinking it's quartz.
d_day
It might be opal, but in the pictures looks like it's probably the chalcedony variety of quartz. Very hard to say for certain from pictures alone.
Morlock
Looks like quartz to me but agree with d_day.
homefire
Quartz I'm thinking. chalcedony works more like a Chert clean cleavages. Opal too soft.

Unitedstatesofamerica1
It turned up 2.3 on the specific gravity test
Au Seeker
Specific gravity of Opal is right at 2.15, Quartz and Chalcedony around 2.7, so if your test is accurate it could very well be Opal, now you can try and do a hardness test but Opal and Quartz are only 1 digit from each other as hardness goes, Opal is 5.5 to 6, Quartz is 7, Chalcedony is 6.5 to 7, streak color won't help as both Opal and Quartz should streak white.
