weaver hillbille
SCratch it on the inside of a porcelain toilet tank lid and tell us the color of the "streak" it leaves( if any).
weaver hillbille
If it doesn't streak red or brown, the next step would be to grind a "window" on the side that's least cone shaped. Usually diamond tools are necessary... YOu might try a tile saw. That type of feature can indicate the flight orientation(if a space rock)... The " cone" being the side towards the direction of flight( if a space rock and if it oriented itself in the same general direction for the majority of the flight through the atmosphere).. I am a newb at this, but I do have a good reference "Rocks from Space" by NOrton. https://www.amazon.com/Rocks-Space-Meteorites-Meteorite-Astronomy/dp/0878423737 Edited July 15, 2017 by weaver hillbille
Suphix
I'll try this when I get home tonight and let you know. Thank you
fredmason
There are no flow-lines or orientation on the rock. Any decent fine/coarse whetstone will work for windowing the rock. It looks like a piece of slag... fred
Mikestang
It doesn't look like a meteorite to me, if that's what you're asking. Maybe post to the mineral forum for ID assistance.
