Hard rock gold

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My boys and I got the privilege to go check out some property that a friend of ours just bought. It's got a lot of high grade tailings that have been blasted out of the mine and never ran or processed. We took the detectors to see what we could come up with and it was quite amazing. Cameron my oldest found some beautiful specimens and my little guy found his first detector gold. It was a great time with the kids. Of course the gold bug found it all. It was fun watching the boys pop them out one after another.

Very cool, Dan.  Gotta love that Gold Bug.  I am keeping an eye out for one for my daughter.

I love nuggets, but specimen gold is a close second.  Many times, I like the specimens better.

Those are some really nice finds. Congrats. I always did like working around hard rock mines.

Treated properly, some of those pieces can be turned into spectacular specimens.

It's pretty awesome you were able to share that experience with your kids.  WTG.

The gold is nice too.

Get or borrow a big sized ROCK CRUSHER .

I would not crush these up. If you treat with HFL, most likely you will bleach the host rock white thereby creating a beautiful gold on white contrast.

HFL can be hard to get and dangerous to use though.

I'm thinking after treatment, the aesthetic value will far exceed the gold spot value.

We cleaned them already with nitric. They were all red and black iron stained. Didnt eat the quartz obviously but they cleaned up nicely. This is how they all looked before cleaning.

Get some Glass Etch. Armour Etch 2.8 Oz Etch Cream

Slow but not as dangerous as HFC (diluted). Cleans them up real nice, eats the calcite first.

Arrow Electric Textile Spot Cleaning Spray Gun With Adjustable Spray Nozzle

This machine is awesome on species. Blast away loose pieces.
