What kind of minerals are these two pieces

Recommended Posts

Bluesman,

Welcome to the forum! :D

We need a little more than just your photos to be able to guess what you have there.

To me these rocks look like common rocks, what is it about these rocks that has you curious to know what they are?

Some info that would help in IDing these rocks would be, where did they come from(?), doing a hardness test, doing a streak test, determining the specific gravity of these rocks, it would also help if we could see what the rocks look like on the inside without the weathered outside surface hiding the true look of the rocks, this could be done either by breaking them, cutting them in half or you could just grind/file a small "window" with a grinder or file, but that would be a decision you need to make.

Found in yard and my curiosity is because there seems to be some type of man made  carving on it and it attracts the light to it when rotated. Was wondering what mineral would be so hard to withstand so much time to keep the carving intact .The piece is between 5" to 6" wide by 4" to 5" in height. The other piece is irregular in shape and was thinking it was possible soapstone  but not positive. Not sure of hardness or if I want to file it to see more in it.
