Sylvia Matt
Hello, My aunt had a fire and the gold coin that she had was in a clear dark green plastic case. Now the clear dark green plastic case melted into the gold coin. Any idea how we could clear the plastic case from the gold coin? Thank you for your help. Blessings! grubstake
Yes, get you some Acetone, and put it in a glass container, put the coin in it, let it set, the acetone. the stuff will desovle the plastic. finger nail poslish remover, but you can buy it in the paint department in larger cans. Au Seeker
Acetone will melt or at least soften most plastics, so it's worth trying, but some higher grades of plastics may not be affected by acetone, Acetone will not harm the gold at all, a quart of Acetone will cost you around $6 to $8 at most hardware, home improvement or paint stores. Acetone is the active ingredient in some but not all fingernail polish removers, so if you have some look at the active ingredients for Acetone and you can test to see if it soften or melts the plastic before buying a larger container of pure Acetone. Depending on the type of plastic you may need to repeat the soaking process a few times, with wiping the coin in between soakings with a soft cloth, to get all the plastic residue off the coin. http://www.wisegeek.org/what-will-happen-if-i-put-acetone-on-plastic.htm

jpuisis
It would be best if you put the coin and acetone in a glass jar with a lid on it. The acetone is very flammable and will evaporate quickly in the open air. Good luck.
homefire
You can get enough Acetone to do the job just buying some finger nail polish remover. Be sure it's the acetone type at the dollar store.
Sylvia Matt
It worked with the Aceton, and the gold coin is free of the melted plastic. Just wondering how do we get rid of the Aceton. It is toxic. The gold coin has no melted plastic left, but it looks like there is glue on to of it through the plastic that melted. Is there maybe a chance to get rid of that as well? Thanks a lot for your help. Blessings to you. Sylvia
grubstake
Just soak it again, and use a tooth brush and some soap to clean it. Grubstake Dawn works best
Sylvia Matt
Thank you grubstake. You mean to soak it in the Acetone again? Will set a photo later. Sylvia
Au Seeker
Yes soak it in fresh Acetone again and repeat if necessary, the Acetone you soaked it in originally has the melted plastic in it and that residue is what you are feeling as "glue" on the coin, to dispose of the Acetone you can set the open container in a safe place outside so kids or animals can't get into it or spill it,and the Acetone will evaporate away and then you can dispose of the container in the trash.
