Adalusite Crystals from Cochise Co, AZ

Recommended Posts

Last Sunday I went mineral hunting N of Apache Pass near old Ft Bowie in eastern Cochise County, AZ. I was hunting in metamorphosed Cretaceous rocks made up of meta-siltstones, schists & phylites. Within the schists were found small but abundant Andalusite crystals. The majority of the Andalusite was found in the gray to black schists and in the green meta-siltstones. The Andalusite ranged in color from black, seen in pics 1, 2, 4 & 5, to reddish-brown (pics 8 & 9) to gray (pics 6 & 7).There were also some schists that were so black, one could mistaken them for coal. There was Graphite flakes found in these. Here are some photos of the finds. I used the tip of a #2 pencil, for scale, in all the photos.
