marshall_davies
Good evening everyone!I've recently been to Morocco for a well-deserved holiday and whilst there picked up a number of stones that I suspect may be meteorites. As confident as I am, I think it might be worth seeking the opinions of those with greater experience and/or knowledge! All of the rocks below are highly attracted to a magnet and leave no significant streaks when tested. I've cut samples ready to go to Meteor Lab in New England (advice on this would also be greatly appricieated). And I've tried to get a decent picture of a freshly cut surface in each case. My nickel test kit is on order from ebay but any other quick test suggestions are welcome.I have to apologise for the poor quality of the photos but I only have my mobile phone camera to hand. So, without further ado...1) 324.8ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0038_zpsqpjqrvds.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0037_zpsopqkfw3a.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0036_zps0nw679r4.jpg2) ~1800ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0044_zpsgzqkgble.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0043_zps8r3ahdis.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0042_zpszqv3axxk.jpg3) 50.4ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0024_zpsc6ujczp3.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0023_zpsrbz9lp3l.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0022_zps9ciusxhb.jpg4 & 5) 50.9g & 57.4ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0021_zps4vfefkb5.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0020_zpsi7sj23oo.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0019_zpsxsry9ila.jpg6) 45.6ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0029_zpsdlqxwxaa.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0028_zpspaxnbv91.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0027_zpsaolfivfx.jpg 7) 46.4ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0026_zps4b889jce.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0025_zpsmwowq3vi.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0018_zpssgbwrli7.jpg8) 301.7ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0035_zpsyuw91cie.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0034_zpsdejq5alv.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0033_zpsx2rucjgl.jpg9) 414.7ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0041_zpsovd0ozia.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0040_zps60y5lnsh.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0039_zpsp0rgu42g.jpg10) ~900ghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0032_zpsewej6hgo.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0031_zpsidxhje8m.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z446/marshall-davies/IMG_0030_zpsiux0q2te.jpgThanks for taking the time everyone! marshall_davies
Marshall,The area you were in is the source of many meteorites most commonly known as NWAs.When you were there did you happen upon any dealers or seek them out?MitchelEvening,Yes! Well, kind of... I aquired most of these from the small fossil stores you see on the side of the road, souks or our Berber guides. No meteorite dealers as such but I did also learn of a 'sorting factory' somewhere outside of Merzouga which I thouroughly intend on visiting sometime in the near future. As you can imagine, after having spent years collecting tiny samples from online dealers and the such, to potentially be able to lay hands upon larger pieces, such as these hopefully are, is incredibly exciting.Regards,M Edited November 2, 2015 by marshall_davies
Mikestang
None of them appear to be meteorites, sorry. Exteriors surfaces all wrong and nothing on the cut faces that looks meteoritic. Pretty typical meteorwrongs.A few are obvious cobble worn smooth by water. Edited November 2, 2015 by Mikestang
mn90403
Marshall,Seek out a 'dealer' over there and have them prove to you it is a meteorite. Once you do this then you will never buy the other rocks again.Mike could see what many of us saw that there wasn't an interior of the rocks you showed us that resemble the meteorites we have or that we see from that region. If you are still there the price you could pay for big ones should still be very modest or walk away from the deal.Mitchel
