AzNuggetBob
That is a beauty Slim. what is the host rock on one side or is it caliche? Ive seen a lot of nuggets come out of that area and in some of the shallow areas they tend to come out of the ground pretty clean and brite. I'm sure lots of other nuggets were previously found nearby but they missed this one. I've heard that many of the nuggets found over by Ely, NV have caliche as well. AzNuggetBob
Slim I'll tell ya I popped a few nuggets out of that area and many of the nuggets in several patches were stuck on top of that hard pan. Many of the nuggets had that caliche stuck to one side. sometimes that hardpan was just an inch or two to a few inches deep/thick. sort of a false or secondary caliche layer. I dug right through it a couple times to see how hard or thick it was and how far to bedrock. the material under it was the same as the surface material but some of the nuggets on top of that layer were smooth slugs, others cut you coarse scattered around within a few feet or yards of each other. Hard place to figure out. not a lot of indicators on some of those patches. AzNuggetBob
Dakota Slim
And then there's the chevrons....
AzNuggetBob
Slim don't get me talking about the Chevrons. That area is notorious for them and one of only a few places in the world they form. one of my favorite rare nuggets. I've seen some fantastic examples come out of there. from a few grams to ten ounces. AzNuggetBob
Dakota Slim
Come on Bob. Tell us some of your chevron stories. BTW, that nugget I posted was on one of Hycroft's (blanket) claims and in case any of our fellow Nuggetshooters are not aware, Hycroft & Allied Nevada have no problem (at least they didn't a couple years ago) with people detecting on the claims they aren't actively working. There's a lot of ground up there and I guarantee most of it has never seen a detector. Getting back to where gold comes from (and when and how), one might assume that in some areas gold found on top of hard pan/false bedrock got there after the hard pan or false bedrock formed. I wonder if anyone has ever done carbon dating up there in NV (or CA & AZ for that matter) and correlated it with the estimated time of various earth changing events. Morlock
I found more then my fair share of chevrons at Rye Patch and the Eugene Mountains. A few were really exquisite and on par with those found in Venezuela. Just wish had taken photos back then. They were something to see.

The Blue Mtns north of Jungo road might be worth exploring also. In the same area. Some big lunkers were found in there.

GeoJack
I did a catch and release, found a very small chevron nugget within 15 minutes of detecting, my first Nevada nugget. Lost it before I hit town. Must have fallen from my hands when I attempted to put it in my pouch. Thanks for the suggestions, will be going back.

There was a Burns Brothers truck stop at Mill City or used to be anyway. I think it's still there but may be under another name now. Could be worth a visit. That was a gathering spot for all the prospectors. Might still be but unable to give any names as it's been awhile since I've been in that area. I'll tell ya Dan I'm surprised you haven't found one yet with all the time you have hunted that area but, when I have found them they seemed to be one out of ten or twenty nuggets in the Eugenes. not as common as Majuba. and a partner and I took several pounds out of a patch in between Sawtooth, Majuba, and Eugene mountain and never found a single chevron in it.? Any tips on which and where?

Any tips on which and where? I wish I could help you on that. A couple locals showed me around and that's how became familiar with the whole area in general. Can't recall which roads I used. You'll have to just pick a road and see where it goes. The one piece of advice I can give you is if someone tells you about a certain patch, forget about it. Disregard the usual signs and find your own patch. A patch could be anywhere as long as it's in gold country. I've had more success overall searching where everyone hasn't then following the crowd to the patches that have been already worked. Just drive around and find someplace far from the crowd, get out and start searching with your detector. Forget the red dirt.. Forget the hematite cubes. Forget the quartz. Gold has been found in areas without the usual signs. If you come across an area that has them, by all means search it but never assume there's no gold without those signs. There's a good chance you may never find a patch on your own but if you do, it'll be much more rewarding then hunting a known patch.

AzNuggetBob
Slim Have you seen Dusty lately, I remember she would come out to our digs and we were teaching her how to run her new Minelab, Last I heard she was tearing it up on the nuggets out there. Started her own Minelab/prospecting shop out of the store in Star Point trailer park. AzNuggetBob

I suppose we could have met at some point in time but have talked to hundreds during my travels. Very poor memory. I hunt mosty in Montana and Idaho with occasional forays down south.
