Help! What is this?

Recommended Posts

Alright, all you geology sleuths. I am a marine biologist and work with elasmobranchs, and have worked with marine fauna identification. There is nothing like the challenge of identifying something. So, I am giving you a challenge. My father gave me this rock/mineral several years ago, and he had it for many years before that. I cannot remember what he called it, and he can't either. He told me it is rare, and I found a similar image in a Google search for rare rocks; this URL leads to that image. It is about the size of a medium canteloupe. I have attached six images, three with flash and three without. Can anyone help me?

I could be wrong but I think what you have is a gypsum desert rose.

This is a link to some photos of gypsum desert roses, there are also other photos of items not even close to a gypsum desert rose, but that's the way of the internet these days, trying to give you more than you asked for when doing a search, it's not hard to tell which are the correct images.
