metwerks
Found this near Munising, MI on the shores of Lake Superior - kind of looks like quartz but not sure - very hard, sanding with 50 grit belt sander will barely touch it - the rock actually glows cherry red when sanding. Very unusual coating on it as well - The 4th photo shows a little area the I couls sand down- Any thoughts? Au Seeker
This looks like it could be some type of agate, which is about the same hardness as quartz, e.g. very hard, it could originate from the area you found or it could have been brought down from Canada by glaciers many, many years ago during the last ice age. d_day
My money's on agate. There's lots of agate around Lake Superior. Most of it is red in color due to iron content but white and grey are also known to exist in the area.
