goldenboy69
Bought this several years ago from a liquidation sale of a large collection. This is one of the only items that was not identified. A local professor looked at this and his best guess was a rhyolitic lava tube lined with chalcedony, but we was not very sure. Any help would be appreciated. Steel Pan
I'd say the call is right. From lookin' at the picture, I wanna stick my finger in it. Looks gooey (I know it's not) to the touch.
weaver hillbille
Maybe from Lavic Lake,CA area? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavic_Lake_volcanic_field or somewhere else in Mojave ERp, maybe not -the area is covered in basalt not rhyolite Edited March 24, 2014 by weaver hillbille
AzNuggetBob
My guess on this, it is a type chalcedony similar to fire agate but not a volcanic tube rather a volcanic steam vent. AzNuggetBob
AzNuggetBob
jmo when these type of events accrue its a matter of thermal gasses venting. but the coloring such as fire agate are drawn into the silicates from the host rock. they are not from the vapor condensation on the surface. Au Seeker
Couldn't fire agate be deposited on the vent tube by thermal fluids being forced up an ancient volcanic vent?
AzNuggetBob
That's a good point Au Seekerwith this type of deposit Its all about temperature and precipitation. many types of minerals are transferred and were deposited in their present form from solutions, including Gold. even smoke can carry metallic minerals. as a matter of fact knowing what triggers precipitation is a good place to prospect for gold. sort of like reverse engineering.
