This thread peaked my curiosity and I found this picture of a faceted gemmy piece. Looks spectacular.

There is a lot of sphalerite crystals here in the Organ district as well as the Balls district (just below the Organ). They were both important zinc deposits. Big crystals of an inch or so are not too uncommon. I never have seen fire in sphalerite but there is siderite that looks just like the photo that steve posted. Looks a lot like opalized wood with gold plays of fire.

I used to have some sphalerite from Elmwood mine in Tennessee. They were among my favorites but looked nothing like the one Bill posted a picture of.

Sphalerite is too soft to use in jewelry. But you do have to see the faceted stones in person to appreciate. Pictures do no justice.
