LipCa
I found a "hunk" of something while detecting. I thought it was a big piece of iron for years until this summer when I left it lying on a work bench out in the direct sunshine along with my work tools. In the afternoon I went to put my tools away and they were so hot that I had to use gloves. I figured the hunk of iron would be really hot too. It wasn't!! in fact, it was barely warm??Ok, I thought I would slice off a bit of it with a cutting blade on an angle grinder. No way could I cut into it.... Hard as steel!!So, I took a grinder to it and after a long while I got a flat spot ground down. It's as shiny as a mirror. It's a couple of pounds, one side rounded like a baseball and the other side fractured off but "weathered" looking.I don't know much about meteorites. Could this be one??I know, a picture would be nice. I haven't gotten to Photobucket yet. (would be easy to attach a pic though )
Hoser John
This is one of the easiest forums to post pics on,simply go to post options, browse to photo on puter, click and good to go. It allows MUCH larger photos also so downsizing hastles usually not needed. Bill has done wonders to make it more user friendly-stay warm up there as looks like a little winter finally?? Mikestang
That is certainly curious looking, have you tried etching the cut surface? You can get ferric chloride at Radio Shack and etch it in about 5 minutes. It's almost too round and too smooth, which would indicate man-made to me, but it is definitely interesting looking. If a W. pattern shows then you probably have a meteorite there. You can also google "assay lab" for your area and see if you can have it analyzed for nickel content. Mikestang
If you use ferric chloride, get a foam paint brush from Home Depot and just dab dab dab a little of the liquid on the cut surface, then immediately rinse with DI water. Repeat until satisfied with the result.
