This nugget was named by Grandpa John. He was one of the first people to see it after I found it. I found it while hunting alone (Thanksgiving morning) and everyone of my friends I have told about i

Fantastic Mitchel.....what coil and how deep? Thanks for the pics and feeding my gold fever!!!

Garimpo,

You touched upon the reason I came back and wanted to post the picture. I want to see some of the nice gold that is still out there and encourages me to keep looking. I have learned to love the solitude of the desert and the long vistas but it certainly is made better by making a good find. I suspect you like the jungle better when you find something too!

Now to answer some questions ...

This was in a wash that sees water maybe 2-3 times a year. It was down about 8-9 inches but it was such a big signal I had a 'hard' time pinpointing it with the 18 inch nugget finder. I was digging for over half an hour in these big cobbles and I had to stop a couple of times.

(I later was told if I put the 5000 into cancel it would have helped. I did that on another target later and sure enough the target became much smaller and it was a big piece of tin.)

One of the reasons the nugget is not damaged by my pick was the signal was 'big' and I had to get my 3030 into the hole to pinpoint it and make sure I was not digging a truck tire (I wanted to see if it was an iron signal). Once I did this I pulled up on the side of the hole to make it bigger and I was under the nugget and it just popped out.

That was the first time I really knew it was gold. It was still dirty and that is when I took my first pictures.

Holy moley Mitchell that is one nice find my friend! That put a grin on your face I bet...

Bill,

I am capable of dancing a jig and I did exactly that when I washed it off with a little water.

Wow....one Awesome find...way to go....yeah....loose lips, sink ships...and lose the Gold...lol  Are you going to acid the quartz off?

Relic,

I have no plans on removing any of the quartz. I may take off a little bit more of the dirt but I even think some of it left on makes it better.

BTW, did your 5000 scream EEEEEE-YOU or YOU-EEEEEE? I'm guessing the latter...

Martin,

As I said to Garimpo ... it was a big signal but it really didn't sound different than other big bullets or iron targets other than I could not turn the coil on the edge and pinpoint it.

I got the 3030 into the hole and it also didn't tell me exactly where it was. (My next trip to the car was going to be for the pinpointer because I don't carry those any more it affects the coil.) The 3030 was jumping around even showing some iron character.

Later after I got it out of the hole, I waved the 3030 over it and the signal was totally broken. It makes a horizontal line across my screen similar to what a coke cap would do vertically when I find them on the beach. I think there are just so many branches that even a VLF is 'fooled' by its shape.

Some have speculated that this was the reason it was still there for me to find ... others had thought it was a big trash target and skipped it.

Extremely suuuuper cool whole lotta beans......Dang!!!!!!!

I'm figurin many fellers spend a life time huntin fer one that big....2/3rds

of that weight is gonna be all Au prolly, from just lookin at the pic, I'm thinkin? WTG :thumbsupanim

Frank

Frank,

Just like a model, I showed you the good side. The gold is not as dense on the other side even tho a continuity test shows that it runs through it. I would suspect you could reduce the gold content considerably if you saw the full set pictures.

mn90403,

Such a large piece as that looks great as it is...if I found it I would do the same, its like the quartz and the gold belong as one...congrats again for an incredible find, and thanks for sharing. Pieces like that are not shared very often, you might just encourage others to do the same, but, but of course....be very, very discreet... :200::200:

Congrats Mitchell on a great find. Almost looks like the first one you found last year. Take a pic of them both together, would love to see them all.

Dave,

I see what you mean about them looking similar in the pictures. Size wise there is a big difference but it is quartz held together by gold so I guess they travel and look the same way when washed away from a main vein.

Hi Mitchel,

Wow this sure beats spending the day in the kitchen cooking a turkey dinner, as delicious as ours was...but think of all of the leftovers you are missing.

Frank,

Thank you. I just continue to 'believe' without the knowledge that such things don't exist for all of us to find. You were one of the first people to see that Franconia nugget I found in October of 2012. Those who saw it said 'once in a lifetime' and perhaps that is so again for this. It was over a year before I found more gold after that one.

You have helped and encouraged me since our first meeting. Now that I have a different coil it seems that my luck has changed. Coincidence?

Coincidence ????

Not in my thoughts.
I am a firm beliver in the ability to change size and shape of coil. It has been my experience that different coils provide a different audio response to my ears.
And with the ability to do this at any given time I believe it gets you back into the "zone" when you have fallen outside of it.

I feel like I am in a similar position lately, I haven't been able to spend much time detecting but still for quite a while I am disappointed in my results.
So it seems I must take off my Lucky 16 round and hook up a different coil for a while.
When you swap coil shapes and sizes you have to automatically adjust your usage to suit each application. That's a mental benefit that is able to increase your yield or POKE :yesss:

So I believe that your changing coils (directly) helped you to get back in the "zone". :old:

Frank,

Here are some 'better' pictures of the nugget. I'll see you one of these days and I hope I have it with me so you can catch the sound with your detector.

A continuity test was done and the gold from the top is connected throughout although it is not as much.

Mitchel, have you done a specific gravity test? :pop:

Maybe we can have a "Guess The Gold Weight Contest"

and maybe give away Frank's Vampire Nugget :yikes: ,

a pair of Patrick's dirty shorts :wee:

or even one of Shep's empty Cabo bottles :alcoholic:

for the grand prize :th_coffeescreen:

Contest ! Contest !...yeah....maybe we can collect some donations for the winner? We can send the prize or prizes to the winner closest to the actual weight. I am willing to donate a Garrett delux panning kit , free shipping.

Slim

I had wondered about a contest for one of the groups. I have not done the test yet because my scale only goes up to 600 grams. When I add up the weight of the contraption to hold the nugget it just reads error.

It would be interesting to have people guess.
