Dakota Slim
I have a triple beam balance that would probably weigh it but I don't know how to do the specific gravity part. Edited December 4, 2013 by Dakota Slim
mn90403
Slim,I need to weigh the nugget in water and weigh it out. The formula is 'simple' but it is an estimate. If I would go to the gem and mineral show in Barstow this week someone there would do it in about 3 minutes.Mitchel
Uncle Ron
What I discovered was that the gravity test takes only into consideration the SG of quartz ... when you have other types of rock, i.e. greenstone schist, and others, the formulae simply don't ring true ... I had one pocket that was 40 percent less because the country rock was heavier by far than quartz... Cheers, Unc
Rimshot
Well with a nugget that size i would go buy a scale for it and weigh it in the privacy of my own home....lot of crazy peeps out there if you know what i mean.
H-2 Charlie
I would do a acid bath , melt off all rock if possible
Hotrock
Before acid bathing it I would be sure to get an SG test and possibly an x-Ray. It's a beautiful specimen and may be best as it is. Fantastic find!! I won't say once in a lifetime. There's more out there. ----Mike
mn90403
I'm not into melting off quartz. I'll keep it the way I found it.I do have a video from Jim Wooddell on a simple way to do the gravity test but I still need a scale that can weigh considerably more than the scale I have now.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3AcRGNX2UwThanks for your suggestions. Keep them coming.

Dakota Slim
What??? Only 8 ounces??? Thanks for the update Mitchel. When I first saw it I was thinking 12+ but after seeing the "other side" I figured it would be less. Question: When you found it, was the heavy side down? mn90403
Slim,I had to dig such a big hole that the entire nugget came out and I don't have any idea how it was sitting in that wash. It was wedged into the other wash stones and sand had packed them together. I'm sure it has not 'moved' from its spot in that wash in dozens of years ... maybe more.Fred,When I showed it to you I really didn't have an idea and I had not picked up a similar piece of quartz without gold. You looked down and said here is a piece. I weighed that and it was 'around' 400g and the speci weighs 637g so in 'rough' estimation I was thinking about 1/3 of the speci was gold. So it is about that ratio. It is funny finding a nugget that big and having a bit of 'disappointment' that it was not a pound. I still have something out there to find. A bigger one may still be in my future ... or may not.Everyone keep swinging. There is gold in them thar hills.Mitchel
wet/dry mixer
Mitchel,Came across an interesting web-site recently. It showed asteroid impacts, three in the U.S. and several in Australia. All are great gold producers. Listed Sacramento Valley as 70% of gold mined.Listed Bakersfield Valley at less than 2% gold mined. The asteroid came from the north that formed the mountains surrounding Bakersfield.Did you find your nugget in your area? Sure would like to MD that area, but am not familiar with it, besides have plenty of areas here to search.Am sure there are more nuggets like yours to be found, good luck, keep hunting them hills, bob
mn90403
Remembering 4 years ago this weekend! Nothing has been done to the nugget. As far as I know there have not been any others found in that gully. I've been back with the Zed a couple of times without success. I have a video from that day I should post up. Maybe next year on the 5th Anniversary. Mitchel

mn90403
Dave, That first one was a 'Golf Ball' nugget. It has 1.5 oz of gold. The egg is the egg. Mitchel
Andyy
A very worthy find to bring up at least once a year. I might even bring it up for its half birthdays as well. Absolutely stunning find. Thanks for sharing. I wasn't even detecting when you first found it. LOL.

BMc
Remember when? I wanted to give this post a BUMP, since it deserves additional worship, IMO. Or at the very least more admiration! There are plenty of posts in the archives of the forum that motivate and inform the seasoned prospector and Noobie alike.
