Chris Coffee
Went back out to the lakebed today and spent about 3 hours walking around and found these four beauties. Went through the same process of identifying them as I did the 45 grammer my daughter found the other day, Everything is identical and the windows show the same as the other. From left to right the weights are: 30.2 grams, 8.5 grams, 16.8 grams, and 10.9 grams. I am not 100% sure that they meteorites, but based on the tests performed having the same results as the 45 gram specimen, I am going to say they are likely meteorites. And yes, these 4 rocks stick to a magnet very well.
mn90403
Chris,I have no reason to suspect that you have not gotten more meteorites from the bed. Did you look up the database and see if they are listed?Mitchel
Mikestang
Mitchel, Coyote DL is one of the most prolific DCAs around here. Those all look very much like weathered meteorites found on the playa, and if the windows are showing shiny silver metal flakes then they're probably the real deal. The wrongs I found out there were all very obviously wrong. Man, Chris, you found a hot spot. We always knew there had to be more out there still, we just never looked in the right spot it seems! The other rocks on the playa are very clearly NOT meteorites. 99% of what is out there is lavic in nature, or little pieces of white quartz. These are the ONLY "rocks" that stick to a magnet out there. We went back to the same area that we hit the other day, and after finding the first two today, I had an idea of the direction of fall. So we started along that line and found the other two specimens within an hour of the first two. We would love to have stayed longer but the wind is blowing very hard out here today. Going to try to go back tomorrow afternoon, but they are calling for rain and more wind tomorrow. It would be cool if you could get a piece analyzed at UCLA or something and see if it's paired.
