What kind of rock is this?

Recommended Posts

It is flourite. It has the crystal structure of flourite and not quartz. Flourite here is all colors, especially deep blue and purple due to the lead and rare earths. Three miles south of the Red Devil there is a whole mountain of the deep blue flourite that was mined for flourine gas and hydroflouric acid. Some crystals were so perfect that they make microscope and camera lenses from it.

Silicates are harder and insoluble. The hardness test is a good idea for ID but once you have seen tons of the stuff it becomes obvious.

Flourite was a big boom here a couple decades ago along with calcite. Lots of flourite mines in Sierra and Dona Ana Cos.
