adam
What does this "s" or "d" stand for on coins that you speak of ? A girlfriend brought over a pile of old coins the other day that her mother ( now deceased) was collecting....
Mike Furness
Ok ... simple answer is: S is minted in San Francisco D is minted in Denver.
Mike C...
S usally means more $ to a collector as compared to the other mint marks because there was less production than the P or D mints but the Big "O" mark is usally the best -MF was correct though about the S&D Mike C... adam
Thanks guys ,Mike , you said "mark" are you implying that there is a stamp/mark on the coin that makes the distinction?
Uncle Ron
It's really a bummer with the mint mark gets worn off ... Other situations are even worse ... I spent several years trying to figure out the B mark on a 50Cent silver, but then found out the be was a booger...a very old tough one, but still, at the end of the day, a booger...Cheers, Unc
AuTSaurus
Adam,Yes, they are actual very small letters that are part of the die that the coin blanks are stamped with, when the coins are struck/made. If you have a loupe, look at a newer coin/s of different denominations and you will be able to find the "mint marks" somewhere on the coins.Hope this helps.Greg
