Where do you buy your supplies?

I'm looking for:

-a file for windowing (what kind am I looking for)

-streak plates

-portable field scales

-size/scale cubes

(I already have: small Estwing pick, walking stick w/rare earth magnet affixed, triple illuminated loupe, lumbar pack.)

What else do I need?

Also are there particular vendors at the Tucson Gem Show who might sell all of this stuff?

Apologies if this is a question that gets asked all the time or if there is a list on the forum someplace that I'm missing.

For streak plates and glass plates, try http://www.amateurgeologist.com/

Electronic scales, try ebay for jeweler's scales http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1311.R1&_nkw=jewelers+scale&_sacat=0&_from=R40

For scale cubes, go to http://scalecubes.com/

For a diamond stone for windowing, check local stores such as sporting goods that have knife supplies.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!

What else do I need?

Water and a way to carry it with you, at least a liter or two

Snake gators (if you're in snake-y terrain)

Good boots

Sun protective clothes/hat

Aha, I am now looking at snake gaiters online. Thank you!

I do have a good camera, and a GPS that works (I think?). I do not have a radio. And embarrassingly, I don't have good hiking boots. I need to find some used, or greatly on sale, that are not $$$$$... though I see these really fancy red boots at REI. :D

Radios aren't necessary, but great to have when you're in a group.

I love REI, I'm a member of the coop. That said, their prices for anything you wear are outrageous! I never buy clothing there anymore. Try a military surplus store and get some tactical boots, or usually they'll sell hiking boots, too. I use a $30 pair of boots made by Voodoo Tactical and they're as comfortable and rugged as my last pair that did come from REI and I probably paid 10x as much for.

Great tip, I will do that. $30 is a great price. Although the ones from REI are red... haha!
