GeoJack
Many moons ago while driving up Hiway 1 on the north coast of California, my wife picked up this big green rock. Well, curiosity got the better of me so I busted it open, much to my chagrin.I walked by it the other day and decided to put my loupe to it,GOLD!I've been told it is peacock quartz. Big Jeff
Chrysocolla/Malachite with Pyrite?
Goldfinger
Looks like low grade chrysocolla ,tenorite, minor pyrite. Use a needle or something to remove a speck or two of the "gold" onto a piece of white paper. Smear with your thumb. Will probably be greenish black in color...Steve

Goldfinger
If you got a greenish black smear- most likely pyrite or chalcopyrite...Steve
GeoJack
pieces were too small to check but I did notice the material just under the "gold" was that color. My finger wiped away the smear as I tried it.Thanks Steve.Rick
Au Seeker
If you can get the little pieces of "gold" separated from the rest of the specimen, put them on a piece of iron/steel and hit them with a hammer, if they shatter it's most likely pyrite or chalcopyrite, if they just flatten out most likely gold. Hoser John
Just get a nail and lay it on suspect and tap good with a hammer and all is answered instantly, as ifn' it cracks, crumbles or goes crunch the rock is leaverite as in leave it right there as copper ore?-John
GeoJack
John,It's a "bringithome" stone. Just nice to look at if nothing else.
oredigger62
Amen Jack ,there are more things beautiful than just gold. Minerals and gemstones make great displays... and there's even a following for Hematite ... it's in the eye of the beholder.
