MacGump ... You must be talking a different Converse boot as the ones I use do not have a zipper and are very light.

Don ... I think I'll leave the pink sandals to you my friend ... wouldn't want to appear to be stealing your fashion statement! :)

Mike F.--- I have a pair of the ones your talking about, much lighter than the zippered version---I don't mind the extra weight too much.

Grubstake---there's a guy down the street from me who sells sandals made from old maypops--also chairs, tables and other things. Never seen anyone buying from him but he has been there from at least 2004 waving cars down. Crocs are hot enough--can't picture myself wearing retreads.

I wear the Bates no metal, Desert boot, no waterproof, but atleast my feet can breath, and I wear snake guards, Full cammo's when hunting, lots of brush, and I'm taking blood thiners, so I need the long sleeves, Grubstake

Big Jeff,

I am also planning to order those same Converse boots. How about the sizing? Did you just order your regular size or something else? Thank you for any information.

Stan Yes they run true to size at least for my 14 wide size... Very comfortable and light too. They even send you a free return thing with the boots should they not fit.

Thanks Jeff. 14W's wow, I thought I had big feet at 13W's. I am trying to wait for them to go on sale since I will not be in AZ until later in the year. Not really sure the non-metallic will make a big difference for me. I have a knee replacement in my right leg and a stainless rod and hardware holding my left femur and hip together.

I received a recent issue of "The Sportsman's Guide", and they are selling the 8" converse non-metallic boots for $53.00 plus shipping. FYI.

If you guys haven't tried on a pair of Keen's you need to. Very comfortable and lite. I trashed my first pair walking canyons for au and meteorites.

Very large area for the toes so comfort level is higher than most boots.

Did I mention they are really lite?

Jason,

Try this "store locator" on the Converse website, you can also as an option enter along with your zip code the "Sku" number of the product you're interested in to help locate a store that has what you seek in stock.

Here's a link to the 5.11 store locator page as well.

Seriously why brick and mortar??? LA Police Gear is great to do business with...You tried the biggest retailer for outdoor footwear (Cabela's) and weren't happy... Just sayin'...And if you got 2 years out of a pair of boots....Even with glue and tape... You got your money's worth....

Jason,

I myself do not have any of these "metal free" boots at this time, but I do plan on purchasing some in the near future. To stay truly non-metallic, IF the new boots have plastic or nylon eyelets,

one thing you can look for at any law enforcement/uniform shop or store is a zipper that

laces into place in the front of the boot, with the regular laces.

After you have it adjusted and laced where you like it, from then on

you just use the zipper. Only difference is the zipper is in front, not on the side.

This shouldn't matter if you can get the plastic/nylon zipper.

I kept my boots this way for many, many years with each pair, before I retired. The only

difference was, at that time, I didn't need metal free boots.

Hope this helps.

Hey Greg I had no idea someone made a zipper like that and thanks for the tip!

Thank you for the links Skip, found a few places nearby.

Jeff - I already explained "why brick and mortar". And I'm not the only one who's had issues with those Bates boots from Cabelas, FYI. Start falling apart in a matter of months with any serious use and definitely not worth the money in my book. I have nothing against LA Police Gear, in fact I'd go to their store in person if they had one near me. Chill out dude.

Don't know what you are getting so defensive about. Didn't see the "no mail box" part...Just making conversation... Sorry I replied to your post...Won't happen again.

I see a lot of posts that say to use non metallic. Excuse my ignorance, but is that because of heat or does it interfere with metal detecting? I have my old Marine Corp issued jungle boots I plan on wearing when I start trekking through the desert. They have canvas sides and I believe they’re steel toed. Should I think about investing in a better boot?

For years I used the same boot your using without the steel toe but then when the detectors got much better and the coils

got bigger I went to non-metalic boots because the new modern detectors and the big coils will pick up any metal in the boot....

If you plan on detecting then I suggest you get a new non-metalic boot....many stores carry them but online is usually a better

price such as L.A. Police Gear....read the specs and the comments for each boot....

Welcome to the forum....

The PI detectors AKA... Minelab... or some of the better VLF's may pick up on the metal in the boots... Don't worry too much about the desert... Just remember everything in Arizona bites, scratches or stings... Take plenty of water with you and drink it heavily... Keep a comb in your pocket as well... Not so you look pretty to other prospectors (This ain't a scene from Deliverance)... But to pull the cholla's out of your hide if you happen to get too close... You can't just grab 'em with your fingers or you'll be really hurtin'....
