Hiking a lot in NM, and sometimes using my metal detector - I have to be very careful about whether I am on public, private, or pueblo lands.

One way I've found to use my metal detector or to prospect using panning methods, dry washers, etc. without worry is to join a Gold Prospectors Club. They have their own placer mining claims for members' use only. The club I've chosen is;

I also immediately picked up some great tips from the club members - they are wonderful people! Some people also choose to join more than one club, giving them more places to prospect.

Still enjoying exploring in other places however, and when on public lands it is important to check their local policies and laws on prospecting and/or metal detector use.

Happy hikiing and hunting!

Very true and I always recommend to folks new to the gold hunting business to join a club to keep out of trouble and learn the ropes while learning the trade. Plus you get to hunt on proven claim the club has acquired which really helps one learn the lay of the land and where the gold can be located in their area and before long one starts figuring out how to locate new areas on their own.
