IJ SD2000 First Time Out

Recommended Posts

Well I was able to get for about one hour early this morning and test my new toy. I bought this ugly SD2000 at a second hand store a couple of weeks ago for a very good price, without knowing if it would even work. I was able to make contact with Ismeal via e-mails and he gave me instructions on how to test it to see if it was worth saving, and to my amazement it fire it. I got another big break when I was able to make contact with Frank "SGTFDA" via this forum and he took the time to explaind to me how all of the switches and knobs worked and gave me some good advice on settings.

This morning all the drama and hard work paid off, I drove to an area between Phx and Wickenburg and found a creak bed with a lot of twist and turns. The unit fired up with no problems, I tested the depth and audio enhancer, and the 5 frequency settings, then ground balanced the detector and started working the creek bed. The first signal that I got was loud and clear, I dug down about 10" and found a deformed pull tab. The next signal was a hard hit, I dug down 12" and found a 38 bullett, just like the old days.

I decided to do a test and layed a nickel on the ground to see how far away I could hear it, man this thing goes deep. I did not have a tape measure but that 8" coil was getting some serious distance on the nickel, I was up to my knee caps and it was still wee wooing..

The only thing that I did not like was I feel the ground balance knobs are really loose, they seem to turn to easy, almost like the are spinning free. I took the side cover off and they are connected. I also notice it was kinda hard to hear when it was balanced, when pumping the coil. There for a while I thought it was in auto track, it seemed to self adjust to the changing ground conditions. I tried all setting and it seemed to work great and it will get some serious depth.

One thing is for sure, this scratched up old dog will hunt, I would like to send it off and have it checked out before next hunting season, I think all it needs is to be adjusted and it will be one heck of a nugget shooter. Anybody know where I could send it for a checkup.

IF you can remove the knobs that are giving you fits , an easy fix to modernize it will be to add rubber o-rings slipped tightly over the control shafts and presses down as far as they will go to bottom out. Replace the knobs and you have rotary dials with resistance and stay where you set them.

Love to see someone make an ol dog do tricks again. That detector will get you some gold.

Hi Frank,

I have thought about rubber o-rings, that is really the only issue I had today. I think one of the problems I had on listning for the threshold when ground balancing, was I was close to Hwy 74 and the car noise was heavy.

I am real impressed with the performance of the modified sd2k, even when the power and sens were at min, it was hitting deep. Channel 2 was smooth, but I had trouble telling the difference between the frequency setting on 4 and 5, and I did not find any nuggets.

The 2000 does not have auto track. You may have been at a spot with light mineralization. Thus little ground noise. You can't adjust something out that's not there . When you hit a hot spot you will hear it Frequency position 4 and 5 will work with that size coil. I would use 5 on a small coil like a 6" at this point It does not sound like the unit has issues other than the two loose knobs.

Oh! My ground balance knobs turn real easy also and it ground balances just fine. Perhaps that's the way they are.

Hi Frank,

You could be right on ground balance knobs being easy to turn, maybe that just the way they are. Maybe the area I was in had real low minerialization, it seemed no matter how I adjusted the ground balance knobs, the threshold hum stayed about the same, but the detector ran smooth as silk and it was hitting hard even on the low power settings.

Tom, you could send it to Ishmael...I don't think Minelab would touch...there are some others that do mods and work on minelabs but I don't know their names or places...

From what you say I agree with Frank...it ain't broke so don't fix it...

But, if you send it to Oz be sure to write for repair and return on the import/export slip...it will cost about 60-80 bucks to UPS it to OZ...with $1000 insurance...

One thing for sure, I need to spend more time with it to understand what it is trying tell me. I set it up this morning inside the house and was playing with the settings, I was using an old nail head about 3/8" in diameter and the sd2k was hitting it at about 5". I cut the nail head off and cut the stem into pieces of 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" and this bad boy would hit the 1/4" at about 3" away, so that tells me it will find the smaller gold with an 8" coil

I need to replace the rod setup, this one is wore out, anybody have a an ideas, I need to check with our sponser and see what they have. Shop at home and support the folks the allow us to enjoy the forum.

Wow Frank, that is some serious mods, I don't think you can get anymore switches or knobs on that hot rod, here are some pictures of my IJ SD2K after I cleaned it up. I thought about asking Ismael to tweak mine, but right now the performance is outstanding and I would not want to screw it up.

Fred, I think mine is one of the early SD 2000's, I am not sure what all was done to it. I know it has the 5 crystals, exterior depth and audio box, and channel 1 and 2 enhancers installed. I know it hits like a demon on small and large targets. I have a 17" nugget finder coil that came with the package that I need to test.

I have the same shaft set up and the after market shaft fit just fine. My 2000 was one of the first 200 Minelab made. Ismael said he bought it for mods because it was said they were better than later units. He later said they were all just as good. So who knows.

Good news, I have been in contact with Ismael via e-mail and he offered to check my 2000 control box and DAE unit, for proper operation. All I would need to do is pay for shipping, so I sent it down under early this week. It should be delivered next late next week. It would be cool if Ismael could do some mojo on my 2k, I will post the outcome.
