Mariposa Mineral Museum

Recommended Posts

Just found out today that Mariposa Mineral Society is in the process of putting in a bid to continue to run the State Mineral Museum in Mariposa, Ca. The state is closing it, however, private groups may petition to keep parks and museums that are scheduled for closing to run them on behalf of the state. The cost to see it may rise somewhat but at least it may stay open thanks to volunteers and some paid staff. Jerry

That is one of the few museums that has an authenticity

that most larger one's simply don't.

Part of why it is so interesting is that many locals have contributed

not only items from their own family history there but found items

by detector operators that also provide a unique window into life there.

The town of Mariposa is one of the true gems of the motherlode country

and one of the last towns to retain a semblance of what it was like

so many years ago.

My wife and I visit the museum once a month when we visit her mother who lives in Mariposa. I take my latest find in to show Ranger Randy and his crew for each visit. He is especially happy to see hardrock gold before I put it into acid to reveal the gold structure.

Be a shame to have it closed and wish I lived locally to volunteer there.
