asteroidbelt
Anybody have any luck ever finding meteorites in rural farm country? I live in central Illinois and it is all farm land around me. I went hunting in the desert around El Paso, TX, and it is a lot easier to find suspect rocks against the sand. Just looking for any pointers on hunting rural areas. Goldfinger
Best chance is to go where meteorites have been found before. You will need a good metal detector and permission from the landowners to hunt the old rock piles and farm fields. Here's a list of Illinois locations. The irons should be easier to find then the stonieshttp://meteorites.wustl.edu/illinois_meteorites.htmSteve
Jim K
The Park Forest strewnfield is pretty much hunted out. Plus it's all private property or county forest preserve with no metal detecting allowed.I live in northeastern Illinois and am hunting farms while I wait for the next fall. As I recall a guy by the name of Ninninger did pretty good with finding meteorites on farmland.Cheers,Jim K
