John Breckenridge
Hello...I'm a newby and curious about commercially sold rocks; river and those smaller used as yard fill. Are they processed in such a way as to determine at least magnetic properties? In my limited understanding of meteorite dispersal (falling from the sky), it seems that 'pieces' would eventually be found in that environment.I live in the lower Western Mojave High Desert and observe new lawns being replaced weekly with river rock. Would I be completely wasting time with my Tesoro, pinging the neighborhoods? I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
Nugget Shooter
Generally Meteorites will decompose rather quickly in water, but one never knows. Finds are where one finds them....
fredmason
You are correct that some meteorites will be included in the matrix of drainages. Some decorative rock plants (gravel pits) process their product for gold...I doubt that anyone would waste time and money processing for meteorites. Except in known strewn fields there would not be a "predictable" rate of recovery...or you could go for the short answer...NO to the first and Most Likely to the second question.Fred
