Steel Pan
The spammers are not concerned with any type of targeting, they blanket thousands of sites at random. I'm an Admin/Mod on a Corvette forum where I clean out spam from the bold to the cagey. Man they got all kinds of ways of tryin' to slip in. Most of our offenders try to slip a link into thier sig. Not happenin'. <_< I just flat out ban all those spamming idiots. I kinda think of myself as a sniper. With one press of a button, I can take out an offender, half way around the world away, with pin point accuracy, from the comfort of my home. How's that for a long shot? ;)I know what you're up against, just play it as a game, heck ya might even keep score. I know, there's a lot more to it than banning spammers, and you are providing a great service. Thank you for all your efforts to maintain the great site you have developed. :wubu:
Hoser John
All forums on all subjects attack the same. I moderate and what a ungodly mess in every state and everyday--this sucks--John :*&$*(:
BobinNV
Spammers are a PITA, and a lot of IPB owners are experiencing a massive influx of spammers, and I think you will knock out most of them with the question and answer challenge. Have you enabled the free IPB spam service yet? The spam service is another IPB tool to fight the spammers. I doubt they actually sell products through the spam, but they try to increase google page rank with the links they add to the forums. Of course if you have enabled no-follow in the ACP, they won't get any link juice from their links and google will ignore them. It's a good idea too since you don't want your forums associated with the spam linked sites, which can hurt your google page rank.
wonderer
Yea Bill, saw the odd links up yesterday. Figured you'd been hit.I avoid clicking on anything I'm suspicious of, since I'm all thumbs on fixing computer software issues.Hope your new fix helps stop it. Its sad that spammer scum can make you waste so much time dealing with them instead of spending quality time with family &/or swinging the MD'er.wonderer
bigrex
Tried to visit your main site and get a malware warning right now, looks like the AZO forum has a few garbage posts as well.

BobinNV
Have you checked the sites files yet? Did you use wordpress on your main site? Who is your host? You need to tell your host to look at the logs and they should be able to figure out how the hackers gained access to your server.

Ted Scott
Hey there Bill. If it helps, I check each registration manually. Meaning I check the email in google before I approve and I research the IP as well. I have plenty of Russian traffic, but no spam ever for years. It's a pain but worth it in my opinion. There's probably some automated way to avoid it if you inquire on the invision boards.Good luck!

Thanks All of you for your input and help!Nice. I think you'll find it works well. A lot of spammer e-mails are already known in Spam databases. Russian or African IP? Better have a username like Russian Drywasher or Nigerian Nuggetshooter or it's bye bye charlie!Good luck!
