minelab upgrades

south fork

South Fork, just got mine back from Peter at Detector mods. Can only get out on Saturdays so have no idea how it will perform yet. BUT! I got the detector back that I sent to him and that's better than MinelabLV did! and that was after 3 trips to MinelabLV service! I will give a report after a few trips out w/ it.

ANOTHER NOTE! Just got my latest issue of Gold Prospectors magazine PRESS RELEASE! Minelab moves to Chicago! "Service and Repair" will be there now. 2 Points to be made-

I was born and raised in Illinois, and for a few years lived close to Downers Grove, Wheaton. I don't remember or have seen since, any appreciatable amount of gold being found there.

Second point, I never met any Minelab repair 'specialists' from the MinelabLV, but If I were one in Vegas, even if I was a geek working on gold detectors all week, I'd be curious how they worked 'off the bench' and there are plenty of places near LV to see.Downers Grove good luck!for gold nuggets that is.

Now my point is, Minelab knows anyone looking for gold nuggets has or wants a Minelab and if possible the latest and best model, so we're caught hook line and sinker (me included). Their service sucks on the PI's (in my own opinion), but the coin, jewelry, and relic detectors are much more simple and maybe someone in Ill, can work on those and likes to get out there and detect. Understand the 5000 is now plug and play and all epoxied in- have a problem, pull the board out and replace- no more repairs. That has it's good points and bad. Just about anyone can do that, but if there's a problem that wasn't found in the initial runs before it was turned out to the public, how will Minelab know it?

I tried Peter at Detectormods cause I've heard good about him. Sounds like he knows what he's talking about and probably most important, he'll get back to you. I've made umptine(sp?) calls to Minelab and Bill has tried to help on why I didn't get my original detector back- no reply. It would be no lost to them, because I've had it modded. All I'd like to hear is 'I'm sorry, but we're gonna try harder to satisfy our customer base and be better' or something to that effect.

Sorry for dragging this out. To original post, has the owner of the detector in question got ahold of Peter, before condemning his work on the forums? Just asking?

Well that is news to me, you would think that i would be the first to hear about it?

I have a 4500 that has the same upgrades as any others that i work on, it is super stable and quiet, I even put a 5 year transferable warranty on all my work.

Check out my site detectormods.com / for a look at mods and all the happy customers.

Thanks Shep for the heads up.

I was asking this question for a friend. I know nothing about metal detectors He stated that two of his friends had problems with 4500s? after mods. The way I understand it the machines are unusable. All I know is what he told me. That they sent their 4500s to Australia for mods. And now they have problems. I was not trying to bash anyone's work That's why I posted the Question. Maybe there just mad because they can't find gold. I was thinking this forum was to help us newcomers. My friend has dial up and could not get answers.

Hi Shep,

I know you are upset with Minelab customer service and You also need to remember it was the previous company that worked with you for the most part before and during a changeover, there have now been allot of changes and I am working with my Rep. with your info to make sure it does not continue to be an issue. Further help became impossible after the unit was sent off for the mods, but you asked that I explain your issue so that their customer service would be aware of past issues which I have done and I will also mention it at the conference next weekend. They are not ignoring this and I am not sure what you want them to do at this point and if there is something you need personally from them I will see to it for you. Last we spoke you said you were making no demands from Minelab and that is what I told both Scott and Kevin. Let me know what you want them to do and I will pass it on to Kevin, Scott, or.... I have done all you asked of me on this, but will do more if that is what it takes... I have replied to ALL your requests to contact the company and they are concerned about your issue, but you have now had your detector modded which makes it very hard on all parties involved.

The Chicago office was announced last summer and is a second office and service center not a replacement for the Las Vegas facility and is opening to better serve customers in that area. The Las Vegas facility will still be open and operating. There will also be a training center in Prescott, AZ soon. This has been public knowledge for quite some time. Minelab makes many types of detector and the Chicago service center will lessen the load on repairs and service to better serve the customer on the East coast and elsewhere.

I have worked with many customers that have had issues and they were always resolved, but there is not much I can do after a detector has been modified by someone other that the maker. I know you were frustrated at the time, but I could have been much more help could I have had the detector sent back for examination to figure things out which now I can not do.

Again I am sorry you are not happy with Minelab and wish I could do more to help restore your faith in us.

I will send this thread to Scott and Kevin so they are aware of your feelings regarding this issue.

Cheers, Bill

Bill

When I just went through my battery issue with Minelab, they told me all warranty issues will be handled in Chicago at the new service center and Las Vegas will no longer be taking care of issues. Seems to be different from what they told you? ? ? ? ? The one reoccurring issue about Minelab Service is they are very bad at returning calls. Great Communication is with out a doubt, a very large part of great customer service. They need to pound this into the service center. When the new service manager told me that he usually does not take calls from customers, I knew we were still going to have problems.

Sounds like the OP has had nothing more than third hand info about detectormods.

I will check to make sure I understand the role of the Chicago facility correctly I was given this info after asking many months back when news about Chicago first appeared at the forum. Can't see why this would even be an issue though. More facilities to do work in means better and faster service I would think.

Bill, I have absolutely no problems with any of the dealers. You have gone way out of your way to help me and it's been awhile since I've bought a detector from you; BUT if and when I do, I will call you.

Yes, I sent the detector to another place to get it repaired and know that Minelab has no responsibity from that point on, but when you buy a company, you're buying the good with the bad. My old detector had been sent to MinelabLV 3 times in about a years time (7-08 to 12-09). The fourth time, I was fed up with their service and went elsewhere. Period, bottom line! You saw the pic of what needed to be repaired and was, by Peter. All I am asking for is an explanation on my situation- why my detector had to be sent in 4 times to be repaired and why I didn't get my original detector back. If the repair tech was overloaded with repairs and it slipped thru, but that problem has been corrected, that's acceptable. If it was an inept service personnel and he's been retrained or let go, that's acceptable. Just a little communications, is all I'm asking for. I talked to a Kathy at Minelab. She was able to pull up my last service invoice. I asked what they did, she said they had replaced parts and all was good. I asked why it showed a different serial number and still not right?, she couldn't answer that, but suggested I contact Trina. I have 2 calls into her and neither have been answered.

All I want is an explanation. I want to hear from Minelab, not any of the dealers, but Minelab, that somebody cares about my situation and it's been corrected for the future. My work is service and repair of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration equipment. If I've been on job and the customer is still not happy; I will give them a call as soon as I get their call and get the problem solved ASAP! That's why people call me back, that's why they refer me to friends, because they can call me and know I care about their situation. It's real simple to me, maybe it's too simple?

I will relay this info Shep and believe me Minelab does care about it and I think if given a little more time you will be contacted. I have never had Scott not follow through with an issue I presented to him and before that Kevin as well was right on this sort of thing though sometimes it takes some research to find out what is up. We just started working together on this a short time back and please give them time to respond as I am sure they will.

Thanks my friend, Bill

Just recieved a call from Kathie at Minelab on a different matter but while I had her on the phone I asked her the question about where to send a 4500 for repairs. Everything is to be sent to Dover for repairs, No repairs in Vegas. I told her I thought it was a shame because probably 80% of gold machines are out west. So I guess there will be a longer down time in waiting.

South Fork

Woody is OK from what I hear. I had my mods done by Ismael Jones. Most of the proven mods were developed to improve the old units. That way poor retired Police Sgt's could afford a good gold detector. Won't be as good as a new detector but it will do the job. Would I mod a new unit, NO. Ten years from now would I mod a 4500, yes.

Shep

Picture yourself in a town with 10000 men and one woman. Minelab is that woman. At least you can say you got screwed by Miss Minelab, the only gal in town.

I'm going to try this one more time. I guess the fickle finger of fate has it's finger up my arse. I've typed 2 replies to this post and computer just shuts off. Dang electronics!

Southfork, sorry for hijacking your post. I hope you let your friend know Peter responded and needs to hear from him. I know all will be solved with a little communication amongst those concerned.

Take care, Shep
