I will be in the Santa Fe National Park area and would

love to have any pros and cons from area prospectors,

I have a highbanker/dredge and detector,any problems

with Rangers?? Thanks, Jimbo

Santa Fe National Park? I live here in Santa Fe and I have never heard of that. Cochiti (Bland) has no gold. There are a few mines but none are gold mines proper.

Is there a GPAA claim there? I know of another GPAA claim near Hillsboro that is miles form the nearest speck of gold. Go figure.

Cohiti is on an indian reservation. Most of the Bland district is too. You cant dredge there at all unless you get a permit from the state.

Lots of good places to prospect here but I have never heard of anyone trying for placer gold by Cohiti and I know the mining history of this area well.

Sorry, I cant help you with info on any of it. If you are talking about the Santa Fe National Forest there is one spot just east of the Santa Fe baldy that has placer gold but it is very difficult to get access. Other than that the only gold in the area would be San Pedros and that is all closed up tight unless youa re very connected.

Bob is right. I checked Geo Communicator and there use to be some claims in the area of Cochiti Canyon but closed in the early 1980s. Only active claims are quite a ways away from the canyon area. The road that will take you near the rim of the canyon goes in a few miles and then is gated at a ranch's private land. The upper part of that road is in Santa Fe NF and the lower part is on Indian reservation. You can prospect in the NF if they haven't excluded the area for some reason. You usually can't prospect on a Indian reservation at all. There are also two National Monuments in the general area and you can't prospect there either. I don't think it would be worth messing with other than to see some pretty country and take some pictures.
