Meteorite Men, Jim Kriegh and Strewn Field Map!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

After the great episode of Meteorite Men the other day I was flooded with emails (Probably due to my Jim Kriegh tribute on youtube) of fans wanting to know more about Jim and his Gold Basin map. Then yesterday as I was looking through some old VHS tapes I found one about Jim! I added a few pictures, a little narration and put it on the Internet. The video is less than five minutes but it's pretty cool watching Jim teach the same way he taught me 12 years ago. Oh ya, his secret map is included in the video!

Take a look here

Thanks Geoff and Steve for telling it right!

Hi Ruben and All

Jim Kreigh and I go way back and no one misses him more than me. 2/3rds of the finds off of the rec area and at least 90% of the recreation area finds on that map were made by me. Some of the videos in that PBS documentory and on the Meteorite men show were filmed by yours truley. I never claimed to be a photographer or film maker I just thought at some point our work might be found interesting by some. Jim was far better at mapping and the detail paperwork than I so he did the grouping and the map work as we both and Twink logged our individual finds. Jim and I thought of many ways and angles to make a buck on the discovery. But we decided it best to freely share our info and the knowledge we had to anyone interested. Prior to the meteorite find announcement gold basin drew very few detectorists because of the pesky hot rocks. Thanks to Jim's inquisitive nature, after the announcement all of the hill tops and camping areas were filled with armies of folks looking to score thier first space rock. At some point with so many unknown hunters it got out of hand and we could no longer maintain the intergrity of the logged finds and map. I also attempted to access the area across the lake. I drove in from the Utah side and got to within a mile or 2 of where Steve and Geoff were hunting at. Jim nor Twink wanted to go so I went alone and barely made it out on gas fumes with a sore arm and an empty pouch. Jim was one of the kindest persons I've ever met and our various hunts were always fun ,interesting and productive. Happy Huntin John B.
