rioscience
Found a rock that is attracted to a magnet and don't want to jump to conclusions...what other types of rocks are attracted to magnets besides magnetite and hematite? It was a piece of river rock in my backyard. It has signs of a black fusion crust and when I filed off the edge, it has an inner metallic appearance. My metal detector clearly signals that it is iron. I have done some research on meteorites and meteorwrongs, but I just can't peg what this rock is. I can't really use surface features to help determine its identity due to erosion. I did a streak test and no red streak, either it leaves no streak at all or a black streak. I don't have pictures at this time but will post in the future... Ideas???? Thanks
Goldfinger
If it leaves a black streak, it could be magnetite. It would be a big help if you were to post some photos. Steve

rioscience
I think a meteorwrong... I did some more grinding on the rock and the black coloring runs through the interior. It also has agate veins running through its center with small shiny metallic specks. Can't be that lucky.... :wah:
