El Dorado
Joined the Army Nov 1966 after receiving my Draft notice because I did not want to end up as an 11B. Did Basic at Ft. Polk, LA. Then on to my advanced training at Ft Holibird, MD. at what was commonly know as the Army Spy school and became an Intel Analyst 96B20. A bit more training in Virginia then off to Vietnam. After 6 months in country, Special Forces approached and asked if I would like to Volunteer to serve with 5th Special Forces, of course Inot only said yes but hellyes. Earned my jump status in Vietnam, Q course was OJT at the famous Recondo School. Ended up doing 799 days in country and looked death in the face on many occasions.... Left the service as an E-5 with an honorable discharge, a couple of medals and a broken body. Was extremely proud of my service and still am today! Micro Nugget
Enlisted in 1960 out of HS at age 17 in USN (a family tradition). $78 per month. After Radio A School, spent rest of enlistment at sea in Gator Navy (ACU-2) taking USMC into beaches all over the Caribbean (three cruises) and the Med (two cruises) and up and down the East Coast from Maryland to Key West with a stop at Gitmo where we got shot at ("friendly fire"). High point was during the Cuban Missile Crisis was when we actually survived an emergency back loading of a company or two of Marines, their nukes (for the 8" Howitzers), their tanks and their gear during a whole gale (17 foot surf) en route to bottling up the main Russian fleet in the Black Sea. Qualified for, and was offered, UDT (as it was known back then), but declined the steep price of shipping for 6 more years. No medals -- especially no good conduct medal. Mustered out at almost 21 as an E-5. $214 per month plus sea pay. Used GI Bill for college and law school. Would do it all over again in a heartbeat. LB Dave
I joined the USAF in June 1964, and was drafted in boot camp at Lackland AFB Tx. Tech School was at Lowry AFB Co. where I learned about Bombs, rockets, and weapons of mass destruction. My first duty assignment was with the 320th Bomb Wing at Mather AFB Ca. Where I learned how to hang bombs on a B52. Life was good in SAC for about 3 weeks then we all went to Guam for 10 months. I loaded the first bomb ever droped by The SAC in a act of war. I figure I loaded 300 bombs a day, 30 days per Month, for 10 months. lets see thats 90,000 bombs. At 750 lbs each Wow I was a heafty lad. we came back home and went back 3 months later for 10 more months of working out. It seems that things had picked up a bit. When I returned I was stationed at Davis Moffett in AZ for Training on the F4 for 3 months and then it was off to Ubon Thiland for some R&R with the 8th Tac Fighter Wing for a year. Upon return I was stationed at George AFB in Victorville CA. I could come home on weekends to Long Beach, and thats when I started dating my Wife. When it Came time to RE UP (great bonus $10,000 + E5) Terrie said that she would NOT Marry me if I took the deal. 40 years later I am sure that I made the right decision.
