UM...whats the big deal?

Recommended Posts

Ok, not trying to be obtuse, but what is the big deal about finding meteorites? Are they worth anything?

Do people just collect them?

Whats the deal??? :confused0013:

Some meteorites are worth more than gold and yes a lot of people collect them. Hunting for them is a blast and I think it's pretty cool to find something you know is from space. However to me the value of the find is meaningless. The fun times I've had, the people I've met and the places I've seen are worth more than any gold or meteorite I'll ever find.

Dude... whats up with your avatar man? You're profile says you're a dude, but why do I see a chicks ass? An avatar on a forum is supposed to be a representation of you or something related to the forum you're posting on. If I wanted to look at chicks asses online I'd go check out all the readily available porn sites on the internet. Don't get me wrong because it's certainly nice to look at (kind of gross considering your a guy) but it's kind of inappropriate for these forums you know. :twocents:

I dont want to sound like a parrot but Del is right about the avatar pic. It's kind of inappropriate for these forums. This post you created was a little antagonistic to the rest of us that hunt meteorites.

Hey Sonny,

looks like you will have to change your avatar again in order to please these guys. Third time so far? Maybe they will be more comfortable with a more traditional look. Personally I like your photo. It makes me feel dirty all over but I kind of dig that feeling so it is O.K.

Hey guys, it is great to be deeply into a hobby, and meteorites are just like gold inasmuch as they foster fanatics. As an old detectorist for years I know that this is what it takes to be successful. Still, everyone is not familiar or as in the know as you guys are.

I didnt take offense and I hunt space rocks pretty hard these days. I guess you would have to spend a few hundred hours searching before you realized how important they are to the man behind the headphones. On the flip side the folks behind the headphones should realize that theirs is not the only hobby, nor the greatest in the world. A man can get as big a thrill from landing a 30" rainbow, bagging that 7 X 7 elk with a sharp stick, finding that 1 ounce nugget or finding a meteorite. You will have to expend the same amount of effort and your odds of success are just about the same. Some try all their lives and never do it. Some do it right out of the box.

So, yes they are just rocks. Most are mighty ugly ones at that. It is perseverence, the appreciation of the very rare, and the fact that most fellows would not even attempt something so unlikely and rediculous that causes the prize to mean so much. The nuggets are just lumps of yellow metal before and after the find and the meteorites are just lumps of rust. The find is the prize and the accomplishment.

Sonny...I am sure you know by now...you can please some...blah, blah...I had to really focus to see the ass through the eyes...pretty neat illusion to me...but eneough of that...

I hunt meteorites for the same reasons I hunted deer, fished, mined gold, hunted diamonds in arkansas, nugget hunt...for the thrill of the hunt. Part of the thrill of a meteorite is picking up a piece of the Universe, more likely the pre-solar cloud of the solar system, and knowing it is a piece of the very building blocks of our own home... The Earth. Stoney meteorites are not the prettiest but there is always hope for an oriented piece, an iron with great "thumb-prints" or the best of all a pallasite with perfect crystals...or perhaps a piece of the Moon or Mars...that would be a thrill and a money maker too.

Not many people really do this stuff for money...but some do make money at it.

It looks like I need to polish up my last statement. I think it is antagonistic to post on the <Meteorite Hunting and Collecting Forum> "what is the big deal about finding meteorites?" It's like going to a baseball game and scream "FIELDGOAL!" when the batter gets a home run. If he is wanting information on the hobby he would get alot more help if he was more tactful. As for the avatar women use this forum just as much as the men and to have a woman's butt as the avatar is a little offesive. I personally dont care either but lets be respectful to all members.

Sonny,

I myself have just become fascinated with meteorites. I went to the Gold Basin outing and was amazed at how you can get a group of guys to talk for hours about a box of rocks. Gold may be pretty to look at but when it comes to meteorites the beauty is in the details. There are countless classification and nuances involved in meteorites and people love to dissect their find to learn all they can. As I see it gold is yellow metal and even though a good specimen is pretty there is only so much you can say about it. Meteorites do have value and sometime it is way more then gold but most people just enjoy the thrill of the hunt and classification. You won’t find too many people wondering how much they can sell their trophy buck for and the same goes for meteorites. To sell any is just to make room and money to find more.

As for your avatar I could give a rat’s ass. However it does make it a bit uncomfortable explaining to my wife :WOW: :POsmiley01: :PO2: that I am spending all the time on the forum reading and not looking at your avatar. :Huh_anim]: :innocent0002:

No offense taken here guys, when you post on these forums it takes the whole element of body language out of the picture which is a huge part of communication. I've learned to not really take offense to what people have to say on the forums because it's very easy to misinterpret something. I don't think Sonny meant to be offensive or anything, who knows maybe he hadn't had his cup of coffee or something when he typed that and it just came out the wrong way.

Fred and Bob, as always you guys say it like it is. I think it's the thrill of the hunt and the feeling of accomplishment that brings us all together on these forums. Another thing I love is the fact that when I wake up on the weekends to go hunting, I can choose between gold or meteorites and both are a thrill to find for me. However gold is gold and thats all it will ever be. Now with meteorites, depending on where you hunt, it's kind of like scoring a Cracker Jack prize... you never know what your gonna get!

Now for the avatar... Sonny an avatar is kind of like when you meet somebody for the first time and you look them square in the eyes and give a firm handshake. Meaning it leaves an impression on whomever your communicating with. Don't get me wrong I appreciate dirty ol' perverts as much as anybody else and I suppose I can see a connection between where your from "Nogales, The AZCrack of America" and the picture. But I think you have to realise there's a million ways to interpret something and everybody has their own way of doing it. I look at your avatar and think "darn thats a nice ass.... oh yeah Sonny's a guy....ewww". Looking at your screen name, the fact that your a guy using a hot chicks ass as your avatar, and where you're from, I have to admit my "Gaydar" is in overload here. I don't mean this to be offensive or anything, and maybe I think this way because I've lived in California to long, but this is just my interpretation of "Sonnysnewlife" so far.

Well put.

I have been asked a thousand times, "where do you sell your gold?" my standard reply is, "do you like to fish?" (Of course the answer is yes.) "Then where do you sell your fish?" I ask.

A man either throws himself into his interests or he sits on the sidelines and watches those who do. Sometimes men throw themselves so hard that their interests consume their whole personality. A psychologist would call that obsession. Many of us are obsessed. To compensate for the fact that we are obsessed we convince ourselves that what we are doing has earth shaking importance.

I have been obsessed with "finding" for many years. There was one point in my life that I lost track of all else. One day I realized that one obsession was really no better than another. Some guys are in to meteorites, some are in to baseball, some are in to Tiffany lamps. All are experts on the subject and can tell you why their obsession is better than all the rest. Any time they feel criticized they get defensive about it. When someone asks a stupid question they go on a tirade because everyone should know how important they feel their obsession is.

I never got any better. All my interests became an obsession. Some obsessions overlapped with others... I love to fish as well as scuba dive, so I spear fish. I love to prospect as well as hunt artifacts so I detect. I love women as well as prospecting so I am divorced. You see the pattern developing here?

Anyhoo, rocks is rocks, and that includes gold and meteorites. A big buck is as good as a big elk, and shooting a 90 pound tuna at 60 feet is the same as catching a perch in a park with a peanut. If it is your goal and it is done, it is good. If someone asks you why you do it be patient with them... A man was once asked why he scaled the mountain and he said, "because it was there". It allowed room for both obsession and stupidity without anyone having to admit anything.

What we do in our spare time IS really cool, but it is just another hobby that most folks simply are not interested in aside of a story or two.

Hey Bob,

I could not possibly have put it any better than you did. Thank you for your perspective and eloquence. To read your post, for me, was to transcend the denials and subconscious motives of the pastimes and passions that consumed all my energies and waking moments. That said, ........................................

(while holding a favorite chondrite) from a completely impartial viewpoint, I can't wait to get out and hunt for meteorites again, and I can't understand what people see in golf. Sheeeze!

Do a Google on meteorites and you will find a library of information about finding, collecting, buying and selling Meteorites. Their value, both intrinsic and monetary is well documented. They are a big deal to both collectors and scientists alike. No pun intended, but I would rather see your smiling face or a chunk of gold when I read your posts. A double barrel whatever pointed at me every time I come to one of your posts, has got me :confused0092: :scare:  :rofl2:

Aloha Sonneyswife,

Looks like you sure got a bunch of panties in an uproar didnt you? When I first started hunting for meteorites i also wondered the same questions and I am sure they all did too. Just that they dont want to admit it tho! The "real value" is time spent listening and talking to people you meet who are knowledgable and open minded enough to give you a straight answer.

The value in meteorites as well as gold is surely in the time spent out in the field with friends as well as being out there in Gods country being in touch with nature. the monetary value is purely secondary if that.

As far as your avatar being "offensive", I have always felt that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If the administrator of this forum felt it was offensive I am sure he would have been in contact with you. BUT to please others you might want to tatoo a meteor trail blazing across them great looking cheeks. :laught16:

Seriously tho, we are all here to help newbies with questions, so blaze away with questions all you want. The only dumb question is the one you dont want to ask.

Aloha and be safe out there,

Stan aka Kaimi

I don't hunt for meteorites myself, but I collect them. Some of the appeal is because:

  • They are interesting. Many are older than the Earth and contain components not found here.
  • They are great conversation pieces. Most people don't expect to see meteorites outside of museums.
  • They have scientific value - there is still much that needs to be learned.
  • Many have historical value - just like collecting any other rare artifact/antique.
  • They are valuable. Per gram, some are more valuable than gold or even diamonds. This is because they are much rarer (by mass).
  • They are interesting looking and can make nice display pieces. Many have textures and patterns not found on Earth rocks.
  • Collecting things is fun.

In the subtitle for your post, you ask "they are just rocks right?". That's sort of an odd question, though. Do you have something against rocks? Yes, they are rocks - extremely rare rocks with historical value, scientific value, and monetary value. :) That pretty much sums it up!

Whoa!

Your avatar was a little tricky to explain to my 9 year old grandson. :eee:

That was a bit embarrASSing.

Dean,

I ASSume he got an EYE full!

Butt, you probably won't let that happen again.....

Seriously, I think the avatar was a joke. It doesn't make sense, I think he (or she) is pulling our collective leg - couldn't possibly be serious. Probably just surprised that it's still up and Bill hasn't taken it down. However, if Bill allows it I'm thinking of changing mine to a pair of Double D's....ha ha ha :laught16:

Sonny had a good avatar to begin with, but caught a lot of flak for it. It was a bloody thumb. I thought it was approporiate...My company is the Busted Knuckle Mining Company. Cant be a miner without a bloody thumb. Whats the big deal?

Guys hammered him about it because he was outspoken and they needed something to pick on. So he changed it. Twice so far. Folks keep griping about it so it fuels the fire. It just keeps getting worse (or better).

Sonny, just turn her over and show us the other side for a while. Some of them will think they are looking in the mirror!

Rock on Sonny!

Meteorites are dope as truck and rare to boot.

They are more fun to collect than my collection

of Jay and Silien Bob movies...

Ruben you mean Double D coils right?

Those eyes are very inappropriate for this forum.

I could understand if the eyes were painted over

with meteorite or gold...

Hey Bob I don't think anybody here is picking on the guy (though he probably deserves it since he was a little antagonistic with his post here and has yet to reply back). I think people are asserting themselves and voicing their opinion about something thats inappropriate and unrelated to this forum. Why not a piece of gold or something related to looking for it? Like I said before, if I wanted to look at porn, there's plenty of that available on the internet. I don't come here to look at half naked chicks, I come here to learn something about hunting for meteorites or gold. It's kinda creepy when you look at it and go "oh very nice.... oh wait... Sonny's is a guy!". Again an avatar should be something that identifies you on an online forum and this dude uses a chicks ass... why?... whats the point of that on a forum like this? It's just kinda creepy you know?

Aloha guys,

Well now that some forums members have "taken offense" to this avatar and stated their cause maybe we all can get back to the big picture and stay focused on the purpose of this forum.

Asking questions-providing answers-disseminating information on this hobby! :innocent0002:

Aloha,
