Uncle Ron
Yo All...Couple days ago was beepster up in the Vultures and got a strong hit...Looked down and spec'ed this beauty right on the surface, but it turned out not to be the actual target...After picking it up and admiring it, the target was still there...The "target" turned out to be a good sized oxidized bit of buck shot, but the target was not magnetic nor loud on my minelab at all...After consulting several of my mineral identification books, I believe it is garnet, and a real beauty at that...I also might be tourmalene, but that's my second guess...All in all its about the size of a dime and would look real good on a ring...If you have an guess about what it is, please post here... Cheers, Yer Unc in the Dubyah
Goldfinger
Hi Ron: I would say it's garnet too but I can't be 100% certain. I've never seen tourmaline with that crystal structure so I don't think that's what it is. Did a search on mindat and garnet has been found in the Little San Domingo wash so it's certainly possible for it to be found in the Vulture area also. http://www.mindat.org/loc-51325.html Nice find. :whoopie: Steve

El Dorado
The brownish red color and the crystal shape make me think it could be a Pyrope garnet. Certainly would make an interesting stone for a ring or pendant.. hint hint
greendave41
Nice Find! Based on the first pic I would say Almandine Garnet. Based on the second pic, I would say Hessonite or Grossular Garnet. Hardest part is that there are so many variations of garnet. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~adg/adg-pggimages.html -Dave
Regmaglitch
Hi Ron, That gem looks like garnets that I've seen on a trip to Alaska. Cool find! Ben
